It presents six detailed discussions of discourse analytic studies, each of which engages with a contemporary social practice: reproductive technologies, police-suspect interviewing, stress self-help literature, sex education, clinical diagnoses of 'schizophrenia' and cigarette smoking. These six chapters map out a continuum of orientations to application, ranging from a clear commitment to specific interventions to a position of cautious engagement. The book concludes with a summary and evaluation of the ways in which discourse analysis may be used to reconcile the spirit of deconstruction with a commitment to practical application.

About the Author
Carla Willig is Senior Lecturer in psychology at the School of Social Science at Middlesex University. Her research and publications are concerned with the epistemology and application of discourse analytic work. She contributes a chapter to Nightingale and Cromby Social Constructionism: A Critial Analysis of Theory and Practice, also published by Open University Press in 1999.

A valuable resource. An oft seen criticism of Critical Theory, in general, is its emphasis on processes of alienation while neglecting deeper investigation into the adjoining processes of reification via modernity's bend toward instrumental rationalization in pursuit of Grand Narratives and positivist claims. In this book, Applied Discourse Analysis, are some deeper delves into processes of reification through examination of the discursive practices that create meaning and set subject positions for participants in daily life. In terms of advocacy, both socially and individually, it is important to go beyond exclamations of support for self-determination and look into the lived discourses of persons and communities to uncover alternative frames and subject positions that give concrete form to discourses that have the power to counter dominant processes that create meaning for the positions subjects hold. I discovered this text, Applied Discourse Analysis, as an endnote reference in a qualitative methodology textbook I have been reading as I flesh out and put meat on the bones of a thesis I have been formulating for a number of years. I look forward to exploring this book's content, the books' introduction and conclusion have already provided food for thought with much more expected to come.
