About the Author

Excellent book

An excellent book on the subject of audio power amp design. Unfortunately far too many errors referencing component designators in Figures and other grammatical errors to warrant 5 stars. Including the wrong schematic that was critcial to the discussion of one chapter.

Unfortunately the hifi world seems to be stuck in the dark ages, where specifications, rigorous and repeatable testing and logic are ignored, in favour of non-blind subjective testing, where the performance relates only to the cost of the item. It's refreshing to see that this book does not fall into that category.

The power amplifier is broken down into separate sections and analysed in detail, with a view to designing a distortionless and very low noise power amplifier, from 20Hz to 20KHz. Assuming a basic knowledge of electronics, this analysis is clear and easy to follow.

The book appears to be written primarily for people in the power amplifier design business, rather than DIYers. With lots of discussion on the cost to performance benefit and other marketing issues.

Unfortunately the text contains lots of self-righteous comments and unnecessary bantar that detracts from the othwise excellent details. Though this was amusing at times.

The updated edition is the best available book on audio power amplifier design.

If you are really interested in learning about audio in depth then this book is required reading. Mr. Self has put a huge amount of effort into explaining the characteristics of power amplifiers and the key design points. He uses results from actual amplifiers he has built, and computer simulations (Spice), to demonstrate how amplifiers actually work and how the various design decisions affect performance.

This is Edition 5 of the book. It is greatly enhanced from Edition 4 which I also own. The added material in this edition clearly justify purchasing the 5th Edition. It seems like a whole new book.

Mr. Self provides some humor along the way as he provides both high level details and in depth explanations of all phase of power amplifier design. He clearly explains and then demonstrates that it is possible to design an amplifier that provides almost immeasurably low distortion, and meets most any other design requirement, using correctly applied, available technology.

The other leading up-to-date book covering audio power amplifiers was written by Bob Cordell and is called: Designing Audio Power Amplifiers.

I consider Mr. Cordell's book to also be required reading. Before the Mr. Self's 5th edition of Audio Power Amplifier Design I considered the two books tied in value. Now Mr. Self's book is ahead but since the two authors cover the subject in different ways it would still be best to buy both volumes for a complete view of the field.

This is a great book for kids that will be visiting Disney World.

This book was not what I expected. I thought it was going to be about things adults could do to increase the amusement of children while visiting Disney World. Instead, this book is for children to increase their own enjoyment of visiting Disney World. The book is for the child to plan their trip, then to take the book with them during the trip. There is a section in the back for them to gather autographs from the characters. I love that it encourages a kid to read! It guides the child in determining what they may enjoy the most during their visit. It also sets the stage for the child to become even more excited about their trip: "10 days before the trip...; 9 days before..." etc.

The book is written in a manner that lets the child decide which portion(s) of the book they want to know more about without having to read the book from beginning to end. It is also good for children of different ages and reading levels; although, I believe it is probably not for children who are not yet in school. I suspect the child should have some reading ability before this book will appeal to them on a personal level.

I liked the way the book was presented so well that I ordered three more copies - one for each grandchild. I intend to give each child their own copy well before we leave on our trip and I intend to tell them that while the book is for "2016" the general information will be good for future trips. I am all for any book that will encourage a child to read and dream. It is good for them.

I am so very happy I purchased this book. We will be traveling to WDW in September 2016 and although I have been to Disney before, many, many things have changed so I needed something that would provided updated, clear information on FastPass+, Advanced Dining Reservations, Hotel Selection and general overall guidance regarding the Disney Parks. I saw this book in store before purchasing on Amazon and I'm very satisfied with my purchase. The colors inside of the book are great and I love that they have included pictures with many of their reviews. I also love the coupons that they included in the back of the book. They are going to be a great help when we are there. The tips and tricks that are included are awesome and I plan on using a lot of them when we travel to WDW. If you're taking a Disney Cruise, there is a small section in the back of the book for that as well. I'm not sure how good it is as I haven't looked at it, but just for an FYI. In the way back of the book as well, they have laid out a few pages for you to create an itinerary for your trip. It's perfect and gives you spaces for flight and hotel information, FastPass+ reservations and Advanced Dining Reservations. Although I had already booked our hotel and park tickets before purchasing the book, I really liked being able to read the reviews of each of the hotels and the differences in each of the Park Tickets. If you're looking for an excellent, overall travel book for Disney, this is the one to get!

My wife is a Disney Freak and buys this book as soon as it comes out every year. She uses it to plan our trips and they make the whole trip better. It lists everything you need to know about disney.

When Sam Schwartz was growing up in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, his block belonged to his community: the kids who played punchball and stickball and their parents, who'd regularly walked to the local businesses at which they also worked. He didn't realize it then, but Bensonhurst was already more like a museum of a long-forgotten way-of-life than a picture of America's future. Public transit traveled over and under city streets - New York's first subway line opened in 1904 - but the streets themselves had been conquered by the internal combustion engine.

America's dependency on the automobile began with the 1908 introduction of Henry Ford's car-for-everyone, the Model T. The "battle for right-of-way" in the 1920s saw the demise of streetcars and transformed America's streets from a multiuse resource for socializing, commerce, and public mobility into exclusive arteries for private automobiles. The subsequent destruction of urban transit systems and the post-World War II suburbanization of America, enabled by the Interstate Highway System and the GI Bill, forever changed the way Americans commuted.

But today, for the first time in history, and after a hundred years of steady increase, driving is in decline. Younger Americans increasingly prefer active transportation choices like walking or cycling and taking public transit, ride-shares, or taxis. This isn't a consequence of higher gas prices, or even the economic downturn, but rather a collective decision to be a lot less dependent on cars.

Great lessons from one of the nation's most prominant traffic engineers on congestion, sprawl and why we need to do something about them. As a Cleveland, Ohio cyclist, I found it insightful, but as a taxpayer I found it compelling. We can't afford unbridled highway expansion, when we can't maintain and repair what we already have.

This is a brilliant book about the history and future of transportation in cities and their suburbs. The book includes a few somewhat rude jokes, and I hope that they will be deleted in next versions, but overall I learnt many interesting and surprising facts.

About the Author
Lee Zlotoff is an award-winning writer, producer and director of film and television with over a hundred primetime credits to his name. Among his more notable creations is the iconic MacGyver TV series that has continued to run around the world for over 30 years since its debut in 1985. Lee is also a recipient of the coveted Audience Award from the Sundance Film Festival for his film 'The Spitfire Grill' which has gone on to become a highly successful musical. Lee is a graduate of St. John's College, with campuses in Annapolis, MD and Santa Fe, NM, where he served on the board of directors for over a decade and is now a member of the President's Council. As the father of four grown children, and now the grandfather of four, Lee is committed to supporting those who strive to improve global futures and outcomes. This is why he -and his children-have formed The MacGyver Foundation, which receives a portion of the proceeds from every MacGyver project.

Dr. Colleen M. Seifert is the SCIENCE ADVISOR for The MacGyver Secret. As a cognitive scientist, she offers expertise informing the development of the book and workshops. Colleen is an Arthur F. Thurnau Professor at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. She received her Ph.D. in Psychology from Yale University. After a postdoctoral fellowship, Colleen moved to the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, was promoted to the rank of full professor in 2001. Colleen has published over fifty scholarly articles addressing the intersections of thinking, memory, and creativity. In my experience, this absolutely works.

Living in Santa Fe – a mecca for gurus and woo woos – I have a natural incredulity regarding anything that’s presented as a ‘secret’. And, I confess, I started from that perspective with the MacGyver Secret. But the fact is, I’ve been using the technique for a while now – and it works!

I met the creator, Lee Zlotoff, and he outlined the process one night in his kitchen. I went home and tried it, and . . . nothing. A couple months later, he coached a small group through the process, and I asked the same question and got the same outcome . . . nothing. I tried it one other time and got the same result, so gave up on it.

Then several months ago, I was at an entrepreneur / startup event in Albuquerque and Lee was one of the speakers. This time he not only outlined the process and coached us through it, he explained the neuroscience. I’ve been studying neuroscience for a while, and what he said made total sense to me. Especially when he explained the time frames.

‘If it’s simple question,’ he said, ‘like, “How do I make this scene work?”, the answer will probably emerge pretty quickly. But if it’s a big, strategic life question, it may take three or four or five attempts.’

So, I wrote out my question (for the fourth time) and then forgot about it. About four hours later, in the middle of another presentation, I suddenly pulled out my notepad and wrote out a strategic vision / mission statement. And it was THE answer to my fundamental question – now that I’ve retired, what is the life work that will allow me to apply my passion, my purpose and my talent?

Eight months later, I’m still operating out of that answer and loving it. And I’m using the MacGyver Secret for other questions in my life. When I need a title for an article or the punchline for a speech, I no longer sit at my computer staring in frustration at the blinking cursor. I write the question as specifically as possible, then go for a walk or head down to my studio to paint. And somewhere along the way, the answer emerges.

Wonderful for Creative Stumbling Blocks

In many ways, I was familiar with MacGyver's Secret because I've experienced similar success with creative ideas after routine events like driving, a familiar yoga practice, and taking naps. The process reminded me of a workshop with Sandra Cisneros when she told the audience that when she came to a difficult problem or chapter in her books, she'd take a nap. Upon waking she always had a fresh solution. Since I heard this advice in 2005, I've been a proponent of the nap to answer a question. What was so wonderful about this book was it affirmed many of the things I'd had little explanation for besides the divine force that envelops all of us. I like the specifics and structure, especially as a researcher, writer and speaker because I often get "stuck" not necessarily when I'm writing, but when I'm attempting to organize. I've used the process to outline and write a sequence of plot events and research steps, and it WORKS! Thank you Lee for a wonderful addition to the "Manifest Your Reality" literature, but this time you help us discover our reality!

Great results before I even finished the book!!

I have been waiting for this book. I heard a while ago that the author was working on a way for each of us to tap our inner MagGyver, and have been chomping at the bit to read it ever since. I am an old-school MacGyver fan, and Lee has been a hero of mine ever since he created the show (I even enjoy the reboot!)
This book does not disappoint. I downloaded it pre-flight feom LAX to Oakland, and by the time we landed, my inner Mac had already provided me with a great idea to a financial challenge that had been bugging me recently. I HAVEN'T EVEN FINISHED THE BOOK YET!
I am a results-oriented business for creative entrepreneurs, and I KNOW I will be recommending this book to all my clients.
I am looking forward to seeing what happens on the next leg of my flight from Oakland to my home in Nashville.

Excellent and unique source for bilingual education

This book is an excellent and the most updated source for students, academics or teachers in the field of bilingual/multicultural education. Its large scope from the basics and historical develeopment of bilingual education to actual classroom practices and methodologies makes this book unique for both researchers and practitioners. The clear distinctions made between important concepts such as bilingual/bicultural literacy vs balanced literacy helps the reader grasp them easily.

The book is also unique and different from the previous sources in the field with its 'translanguaging' perspective. The author of the book, Ofelia García, has caught a perpective much-awaited in the bi/multicultural education field. The theories and all the information makes better sense with the overall perspective of translanguaging.

Not only bilingual education but also ESL researchers and practitioners will benefit greatly from this book. With its concise review of language teaching methodologies and theories of bilingualism, the book covers the foundations of the field of ESL and the smooth intersection of both fields. Thus, I strongly recommend the ESL professionals to own one copy.

Another strength of the book is that it reveals the myths about bilingual education in a systematic manner. Throughout the whole work, the reader is constantly educated in the field in terms of its various dimensions. At the end, the reader can clearly see why those myths are 'myths.' Excellent book for educators!

I found this book to be extremely insightful, well detailed and extremely useful as both a student of education and a teacher. It builds on history, social contexts, and research, and paves a new, hopeful direction for bilingual education. I enjoyed its blend of international research, US examples, and qualitative research and found the information to be both insightful and practical for my actual teaching. Especially in the current political climate, this book is extremely valuable for all in the field of education - teachers (of all students), teacher-educators, policy makers - and anyone interested in languages, bilingualism, and the diversity of our students.

This is an excellent and comprehensive book for those interested in Bilingual/Multilingual Education. It examines the history and current state of Bilingual Education throughout the world and proposes a new direction for Bilingual Education in the 21st Century. It has both a theoretical and practical dimension. And so, can be beneficial both for scholars and practitioners. The book's appeal can also extend to all language educators. I used various chapters of this book in one of my TESOL courses and students found it very insightful and valuable. It is simply a must read book for educators around the world.
