Crosstalk, by Connie Willis

Science fiction icon Connie Willis brilliantly mixes a speculative plot, the wit of Nora Ephron, and the comedic flair of P. G. Wodehouse in Crosstalk—a genre-bending novel that pushes social media, smartphone technology, and twenty-four-hour availability to hilarious and chilling extremes as one young woman abruptly finds herself with way more connectivity than she ever desired.

In the not-too-distant future, a simple outpatient procedure to increase empathy between romantic partners has become all the rage. And Briddey Flannigan is delighted when her boyfriend, Trent, suggests undergoing the operation prior to a marriage proposal—to enjoy better emotional connection and a perfect relationship with complete communication and understanding. But things don’t quite work out as planned, and Briddey finds herself connected to someone else entirely—in a way far beyond what she signed up for.

It is almost more than she can handle—especially when the stress of managing her all-too-eager-to-communicate-at-all-times family is already burdening her brain. But that’s only the beginning. As things go from bad to worse, she begins to see the dark side of too much information, and to realize that love—and communication—are far more complicated than she ever imagined.

“A rollicking send-up of obsessive cell phone usage in too-near-future America . . . “Think smart phones and social media are threatening privacy? Imagine if you could hear everyone’s thoughts—and they could hear yours. Chapter One

“Let me not to the marriage of true minds admit impediments.”

—William Shakespeare, “Sonnet 116”

By the time Briddey pulled into the parking garage at Commspan, there were forty-two text messages on her phone. The first one was from Suki Parker—of course—and the next four were from Jill Quincy, all saying some variant of “Dying to hear what happened.” Suki’s said, “Heard rumor Trent Worth took you to Iridium!???”

Of course you did, Briddey thought. Suki was Commspan’s very own Gossip Girl. And that meant by now the whole company knew it. It was a good thing Commspan didn’t have a no-fraternization policy—she and Trent could never have kept their romance secret. But she’d hoped to keep them from finding out about last night at least until she could tell her family. If they don’t know already.

She scanned through her other texts. There were five from her sister Kathleen, eight from her sister Mary Clare, and nine from Aunt Oona reminding her of the Daughters of Ireland Gaelic poetry reading Saturday night.

I should never have given her a smartphone, Briddey thought. It had never occurred to her that her great-aunt would figure out how to use it—she couldn’t even set her DVR. Or her clocks. But Briddey had reckoned without Aunt Oona’s desire to pester her constantly about the Daughters of Ireland. She’d gotten Maeve to teach her, and she now sent Briddey texts about it twenty times a day.

Briddey quickly read through the rest of their messages, but none of them began, “OMG! You can’t be seriously thinking of doing this!”

Good. That meant she still had time to decide what she was going to say to them—though not much, given the speed of communication these days.

She scrolled quickly through the rest of her messages to see if there was one from Trent. There was. It said simply, “Love you. Call me ASAP.” She very much wanted to, but the longer she was out here in the garage, the more likely Jill—or worse, Suki—was to drive in and begin interrogating her, and she’d come to work early precisely to avoid that. Talking to Trent would just have to wait till she got safely to her office.

She got out of her car and walked quickly toward the main door, checking the other cars to see who else was here. She didn’t see Trent’s Porsche. She didn’t see Suki’s car either, or her assistant, Charla’s, which was good, but Jill’s Prius was there, parked next to C.B. Schwartz’s ancient Honda.

His car was always here—Briddey suspected he lived in his lab, sleeping on the sagging couch that looked like he’d retrieved it from a curb somewhere. But Jill usually arrived late, and Briddey wouldn’t put it past her to come early expressly to pump Briddey. She was probably lying in wait for her in the lobby. I’ll have to go in the side entrance, Briddey thought, changing course, and hope nobody sees me on the way there.

Nobody did, and there was no one in the elevator or up on four. Good, Briddey thought, hurrying down the hall. With Charla not in yet, she could go straight into her office, barricade the door, and come up with some way to break this to her family before they began bombarding her with calls saying, “Why didn’t you answer any of my texts? What’s wrong?”

Especially Aunt Oona, who always immediately leaped to the conclusion that something terrible had happened to her and began calling around to all the hospitals. And this time she’ll be convinced she was justified in her premonition, Briddey thought as she turned down the hall to her office.

“Briddey!” Jill Quincy called from the end of the hall.

So close, Briddey thought, trying to decide whether she could make it to her office before Jill reached her, but Jill was already running toward her, calling, “There you are! I’ve been texting you all morning! I didn’t see you come in.”

She skidded to a stop next to Briddey. “I was down in the lobby,” she said breathlessly, “but I must have missed you. I heard you and Trent Worth went to dinner at Iridium last night. So what happened?”

I can’t tell you, Briddey thought. Not till I’ve told my family. But she couldn’t refuse to talk either, or that would be all over the building within seconds. “Come here,” she said, and pulled Jill into the copy room so passersby wouldn’t hear them.

“Well?” Jill said the moment Briddey’d shut the door. “He proposed, didn’t he? Oh, my God, I knew it! You are so lucky! Do you know how many women would kill to be engaged to Trent Worth? And you managed to snag him! After only six weeks!”

“I didn’t ‘snag’ him,” Briddey said, “and he didn’t propose.” But Jill wasn’t listening.

“Let me see your ring!” she cried. “I’ll bet it’s gorgeous!” She grabbed for Briddey’s hand and then, as its ringlessness registered, asked, “Where is it?”

“We’re not engaged,” Briddey said.

“What do you mean, you’re not engaged? Then why did he take you to a place like Iridium? On a Thursday? Oh, my God! He asked you to get an EED, didn’t he? That’s even better than getting engaged!” She hugged Briddey. “I am so happy for you! I can’t wait to tell everybody!” She started for the door.

“No, don’t!” Briddey said, grabbing her arm. “Please!”

“Why not?” Jill asked, her eyes narrowing suspiciously. “Don’t tell me you turned him down!”

“No, of course not,” Briddey said. “It’s just—”

“Just what? He’s the most eligible guy at Commspan! And he must love you or he wouldn’t have asked you to get an EED! And you obviously love him or you wouldn’t have said yes. So what’s the problem?”

She gave Briddey a searching look. “I know what it is. You’re disappointed he didn’t ask you to have it and propose, aren’t you?”

And now that would be all over Commspan, too. “No, not at all,” Briddey said. “He said he wants to wait to get engaged till after we have the EED, so I’ll be able to sense how much he loves me when he asks me.”

“Oh, my God, that’s the most romantic thing I’ve ever heard! I can’t believe it! He’s gorgeous, he’s willing to commit, and he’s romantic! Do you know how rare that is? All the guys I date are either commitment-phobes or liars—or both. You are so lucky! It’s that hair of yours. Guys go wild for red hair. Maybe I should dye mine red.” She frowned. “You still haven’t told me why you don’t want me to tell anyone.”

“It’s my family. I’m not sure how to break this to them.”

“You don’t think they’ll be happy? But he’s so perfect! He’s got a great job and a great car, and the losers your sister Kathleen dates . . . Or is it the EED? Everyone says it’s totally safe.”

“It is,” Briddey said. “But they’re kind of—”

“Overprotective?”

No, meddlesome and interfering. “Yes, so don’t say anything till I’ve told them, okay?”

“Only if you tell me all the gory details! I want to know when you’re having it done and—”

Briddey’s phone rang. It was Trent’s ring tone, but that didn’t mean it was him. The last time she’d been with the family, Maeve had done something to her phone so that half the time it said it was him when it wasn’t, and Briddey hadn’t been able to fix it.

But at least it was a way out of the conversation. “Sorry,” Briddey said to Jill. “I just need to see who this is.” She glanced at the screen. “Look, I need to take this.” She opened the copy room door and started out into the hall. “Promise me—”

“My lips are sealed,” Jill said. “But you have to promise to tell me everything.”

“I will.” Briddey turned away so Jill couldn’t see her declining the call, then put the phone up to her ear, said, “Hello?” and walked briskly down the hall till she was out of sight.

She stuck the phone back in her pocket. And was instantly sorry when she saw Phillip from Logistics bearing down on her. “I heard via the grapevine that you and Trent Worth are going to get an EED,” he said.

How is that possible? Briddey thought. I only left Jill ten seconds ago.

“Wow! Just like Tom Brady!” Phillip was saying. “Congratulations! That’s great! But I hope you’re not going to do it till after your boy Trent comes up with a better idea for the new phone than just more memory and an unbreakable screen. The rumor is Apple’s coming out with something that’ll blow every other smartphone out of the water, and Trent can’t afford to be laid up in the hospital—”

“The EED’s not major surgery,” Briddey began, but Phillip wasn’t listening either.

“If we don’t watch out, Commspan could be the next Nokia,” he said, and launched into a history of smartphone-company failures. “A small company like us can’t compete unless we come up with something revolutionary, a whole new concept, and we need to come up with it fast, or—”

Come on, Aunt Oona, Briddey thought. You usually call me every five minutes. Where are you when I need you?

Briddey’s phone rang. Thank you, she breathed. “I have to take this in my office,” she said. “I’ll see you at the meeting at eleven,” and walked off.

But it wasn’t Aunt Oona who’d saved her. It was Mary Clare, and the instant after Briddey sent the call to her voicemail, she got a text from Maeve. “I’m fine,” it read. “Pay no attention to my mother.”

Which meant they still didn’t know, thank goodness, though she felt sorry for Maeve. What was it this time? Videogames? Bulimia? Cyberbullying? Mary Clare was constantly in hysterics over her, even though Maeve was a perfectly normal nine-year-old girl.

In fact, she’s the only normal member of my family, Briddey thought.

Mary Clare certainly wasn’t normal. She obsessed constantly about Maeve’s homework, her grades, whether she’d get into an Ivy League college, her friends, her eating habits (Mary Clare was convinced she was anorexic), and the fact that she didn’t read enough, even though (or possibly because) Mary Clare was constantly forcing Little Women and Alice in Wonderland on her.

Last week Mary Clare had been convinced Maeve was sending too many texts, and the week before that that she was eating too much sugared cereal (which didn’t exactly square with the anorexia). Today it was probably nude selfies. Or the hantavirus.

For Maeve’s sake, Briddey should really call Mary Clare and try to calm her down, but not till she’d worked out what she was going to say about the EED. And she didn’t have much time. Half of Commspan probably knew by now, and one of them would be bound to mention it to Aunt Oona the next time she “popped in” with Maeve to show her how Maeve looked in her new step-dancing costume and try to convince her to go to some boring Daughters of Ireland thing . . .

Oh, my God, and there was Suki, Grapevine Girl herself, emerging from the Human Resources office. Briddey cast decorum to the winds and sprinted for the safety of her office. She yanked the door open and flung herself inside—and practically into her assistant’s arms.

“I thought you’d never get here,” Charla said, steadying her. “You’ve got a million messages, and I want to hear all about last night! You are so lucky to be getting an EED!”

Faster than a speeding bullet, Briddey thought. If Commspan wants a revolutionary form of communication, they should design a phone based on our grapevine.

“I didn’t see your car in the garage,” Briddey said.

“Nate gave me a ride to work. I wish I could talk him into having an EED done. It would be great to know whether he loves me or not. You are so lucky you won’t have to worry about that anymore. I mean, I spend all my time trying to figure out when he tells me he does, is that for real or does he just want to hook up? I mean, last night, he—”

“You said I had messages. Who are they from?”

“Your sister Mary Clare mostly, and your aunt and your other sister. I put them all on your computer. I thought you told them not to phone you at work.”

“I did,” Briddey said. But they didn’t listen. As usual.

“Did you talk to them?” she asked aloud, dreading Charla’s answer, but Charla shook her head.

Thank goodness for that. “If they call again,” Briddey said, “do not, repeat, do not say anything to them about the EED. I haven’t had the chance to tell them yet, and I want to be the one to break the news.”

“They’ll be so excited!”

Wanna bet? “Who are the other messages from?” she asked.

“Trent Worth called and said to call him as soon as you got in, and so did Trish Mendez and Rahul Deshnev’s assistant. And Art Sampson needs you to look over his memo on improving interdepartmental communication right away and tell him if you have any suggestions to add. It’s on your computer. So when he asked you, were you thrilled?”

“Yes,” Briddey said. “If anyone else comes in or calls, tell them I can’t talk to them till after the meeting.” She went into her office, shut the door, and called Trent. He didn’t answer.

She texted and messaged him telling him to call her, tried Rahul Deshnev’s assistant with the same result, then called Trish Mendez. “Is it true that you and Trent Worth are going to have an EED?” Trish said.

“Yes,” Briddey said, thinking, I don’t think interdepartmental communication needs any improving.

“That’s wonderful!” Trish said. “When are you having it done?”

“I don’t know. Trent wants to have Dr. Verrick do it, and—”

“Dr. Verrick? Oh, my God! He did Brad and Angelina’s, didn’t he?”

“Yes, so he has a really long waiting list, and I don’t know when we’ll even be able to get in to see him, let alone schedule the EED.”

“He did Caitlyn Jenner’s, too, didn’t he?” Trish said. “And Kim Kardashian’s, though that one didn’t work because she fell in love with somebody else, I can’t remember his name. He was in the last Avengers movie.”

This was going to take all day. Briddey held her phone close to the desk and rapped twice on the desktop with her fist. “Come in,” she called, and put the phone up to her ear. “Listen, my appointment’s here. Can I call you back?”

She hung up and, with a feeling of “out of the frying pan, into the fire,” checked the twenty-two messages from her family—correction, thirty-one—to make sure they still didn’t know, starting with Mary Clare’s in case she’d decided Maeve was possessed by demons and had scheduled an exorcism or something.

Unique and refreshing
By renee
This book surprised me...I was hesitant of buying it...It was not at all my usual type of book but I was desperate for something new....It immediately grabbed me from its first page and I didn't put it down until I finished it... It was a refreshing read from the typical genre's that are out there.... same stories over and over....Not this book! I'm glad I gave this author a chance...I am a new fan!

The very light side of Connie Willis
By Angie Boyter
Briddey is elated! Her boyfriend Trent has asked her to get an EED, couples surgery that enables recipients to intensify and better feel their partners’ emotions. They have to keep their plans secret from their colleagues at high-tech communications company Commspan and Briddey’s very intrusive Irish-American family to avoid gossip and interference (Good luck with that!). The surgery does take place, though, and Briddey soon begins to “hear” not just emotions but actual thoughts. The problem is that the sender isn’t Trent….
Since the plot centers on telepathy and emotional enhancement via surgery, Crosstalk will probably be shelved as science fiction, but I think it is better described as romantic comedy and can easily envision it as a big-screen summer hit, featuring your favorite romantic comedy acting duo. I noticed Amazon classifies it as Romance.
I enjoy Willis’ short stories and novellas in Analog/Asimov magazines and look forward to her annual Christmas stories. It seemed to me that Crosstalk had enough meat for a novella or short novel, but it had bloated into over 500 pages, and there were many times when I was thinking, “Okay, okay. Get on with it.” In addition, while it is clear that we are supposed to figure out what was going on before Briddey does, it was obvious so early that it rather spoiled the fun.
The length of the book may also have contributed to some of the aspects I found less successful. Willis is known for her quirky rather Dickensian characters. In Crosstalk Briddey is a delight, as is her precocious nine-year-old niece Maeve, who is always one step ahead of her helicopter mother’s attempts to monitor and control her life. CB, the weirdo who works in the basement of Commspan, is the hero of the book whom we all root for. One-dimensional characters like Maeve’s interfering mother, though, become downright annoying with repetition, and in 500 pages there can be a lot of repetition.
Willis has fun playing with our obsessive texting and phoning, but that joke gets stale, too.
Despite the length, Crosstalk is not exactly meticulous in its details. Unless I missed it (and I was on the lookout) the term EED is never expanded. There are some obvious questions about how the telepathy works that are never addressed. We are told that CB never went to college; then how did he get a job doing research at Commspan? Another obvious question involves the pop culture music, shows, and books telepaths use to screen out voices. This book obviously takes place in the very near future. The main characters are in their late 20s. So why are they citing songs like Teen Angel and shows like Gilligan’s Island, which went off the air in 1967? Unless there is a reason, which should be given, people like Briddey and CB would naturally use much newer references.
Readers who especially admire the light side of Connie Willis will enjoy this book; those who favor her more thoughtful writing are likely to be disappointed. If you’ve never read Willis, DO treat yourself to The Doomsday Book. To sample her more playful side, try To Say Nothing of the Dog.

Cute, funny, and clever, but a little lightweight
By J. Gitzlaff
Disclaimer: I'm writing this review based on an advance reader copy: with only a couple of months before publication I assume that probably it's in its final state except for spelling and syntax, though honestly I think this is a "very good" book which probably could become "great" with just a little more time and refinement in editing. I came to read Crosstalk in part because I love CW's earlier book To Say Nothing of the Dog. It was the first CW book I read, and from early word of mouth I get the sense that a lot of people are going to be drawing comparisons between the two (or expecting other to). IHMO, though, that's doing a disservice to both books.

In Crosstalk the narrative begins with our protagonist, Briddey, planning to get an EED (a small speculative medical implant intended to detect and transmit emotional states to a matching EED implanted in her boyfriend). As plot devices go, it's a very clever idea, and the books starts strong. From there, we quickly come to know Briddey through her inner monologue, various supporting characters are introduced, and unintended consequences occur. I'm not going to lie - I thought it was a pretty engaging page turner, and I set aside time to read more than I do for most books.

One of the things I enjoy about CW's writing is that she clearly takes the time and effort to lay breadcrumbs throughout her text, hints that help a careful reader see where things are going or - after you've finished the book - you can think back on and say "ah, it was there all along." TSNOTD was a masterwork in that respect. Crosstalk certainly bears a family resemblance to TSNOTD, but it's a much less intricate book and the general direction the story will take is not hard to suss out. There were a couple of turnings to the plot that I didn't see coming (one at around the 150 page mark, and another at around 400 pages in), but I'm afraid that many of the other twists and reveals - including a couple of the bigger ones - were telegraphed a little too clearly, and I was anticipating them a bit too far in advance. So all in all, I'd give it a rating somewhere in the very-good-but-not excellent range, probably 3 stars for some people and 4 stars for others, but I like CW's stuff so I'll round it up to 4.

And now, for the obligatory nitpicking: (1) People don't really conduct their own interior monologue in complete sentences, though I can sympathize if CW didn't want to write a couple of hundred pages of (literal) stream of consciousness. (2) Maeve is simply too mature and precocious for a 9-year old. Thirteen, fourteen, maybe. (3) Contrary to the ad copy, Briddey didn't really seem like a "high powered exec." And based on her interior monologue, which after all is the whole focus of this book, she seldom seemed to do any work or even think about her job. (4) Good god CB mansplains to her like crazy through the whole book. I guess there's a narrative reason why he does that, but still.... (5) I think that in general, Briddey probably would've been a little more interesting if she had more agency. Less "being rescued" and "being taught" and more doing things on her own...a role which for some reason was a role which devolved onto the 9-year old girl. I don't get that.

Looked high and low for a service manual for these 4-stroke suzukis, and finally settled on this one. Shipping took a little while, but the book arrived in as-new condition, and covered exactly what I needed it to. Good luck finding it anywhere else here stateside, these bikes were a lot more common in europe and asia.

Signal Processing for Neuroscientists: An Introduction to the Analysis of Physiological Signals, by Wim van Drongelen

Signal Processing for Neuroscientists introduces analysis techniques primarily aimed at neuroscientists and biomedical engineering students with a reasonable but modest background in mathematics, physics, and computer programming. The focus of this text is on what can be considered the ‘golden trio’ in the signal processing field: averaging, Fourier analysis, and filtering. Techniques such as convolution, correlation, coherence, and wavelet analysis are considered in the context of time and frequency domain analysis. The whole spectrum of signal analysis is covered, ranging from data acquisition to data processing; and from the mathematical background of the analysis to the practical application of processing algorithms. Overall, the approach to the mathematics is informal with a focus on basic understanding of the methods and their interrelationships rather than detailed proofs or derivations. One of the principle goals is to provide the reader with the background required to understand the principles of commercially available analyses software, and to allow him/her to construct his/her own analysis tools in an environment such as MATLAB®.

* Multiple color illustrations are integrated in the text
* Includes an introduction to biomedical signals, noise characteristics, and recording techniques
* Basics and background for more advanced topics can be found in extensive notes and appendices
* A Companion Website hosts the MATLAB scripts and several data files:

Fills an important niche
By JMB
This book is clearly not intended for the beginner. It is intended for graduate students or undergraduates with a good working knowledge of at least calculus although many people benefit from previous exposure to differential equations in reading this book. There are many books out there in the math and physics literature that cover many of these topics but are entirely incomprehensible to the average neuroscientist. This book is the only book on the market that bridges the knowledge gap between students who already possess an introductory quantitative background and those capable of reading modern quantitative literature from fields such as engineering and signal processing. It is also the only book for neuroscientists that introduces these more advanced concepts from the perspective of a neuroscience (i.e. using EEG recordings, etc. to illustrate the methodology). Finally, the Matlab code presented in the book can in many instances be used directly in one's own research making this book a very practical investment.

Useful.
By High Definition
This book contains useful exercises and demonstrations of MATLAB code that are worth looking at. Overall, I think it covers the major topics and does a decent job fulfilling that purpose.

Having said that, however, the language of the book is not reader-friendly. It's not to say that we aren't dealing with advanced material here, because it wasn't intended for the beginner. Don't expect that you'll just be able to pick up the text and read it without any prior knowledge.

I would have given this book an additional star, however, there are some errors of calculation in the beginning exercises. If you are the advanced reader, you'll pick up on these--someone other than myself actually picked up on these, so don't just take the calculation and their end result to be the answer--as always, be cautious when you read.

Outstanding if you're up on your ODEs
By Let's Compare Options Preptorial
I'm an EE who writes domain specific languages for robotics, and also works in medical devices. I've worked in Neuro a LOT but am not a Neurologist. From an Engineering viewpoint, signal processing is about analyzing, transforming and designing time and/or frequency based signals. The two major "divisions" of the field include analog and digital. The major "tools" are advanced statistics (read: sampling), transforms and filters.

This book attempts to put mostly DSP in biological frames with EEG type examples for the harmonics. If you're either a neuro person who is up on ordinary differential equations (a little pdes don't hurt), or you've taken EE courses in SP, you will LOVE this text. In an ironic sense, biological neural and synaptic nets are "sortof" analog, whereas SP is now heavily digital. Over a decade ago some of Neurology started to analyze spiking and other neuronal systems via dynamical systems models-- meaning differential equations, and if you're a part of that group, this book will be wonderful for you.

If you are very rusty on calculus, haven't done any linear algebra, and no ODEs/PDEs, and especially if you're an autodidact, I'd pick up one of the inexpensive Dover intros to Fourier transforms, odes and pdes before tackling this. You can get some of these for as little as $3 US. BTW, this book also has a number of amazing new and used "deals" and I've seen it new for as low as $35 US, so SHOP it, especially via Amazon third parties and at Abe Books.

I worked at GE in MRI and NMR for a while and took a number of neural imaging physics classes. In addition to the signal processing features of neural rhythms and spikes themselves, many measurement and research technologies are also SP based, eg. ASP- RF in the case of MRI. Matlab or its GNU free version are musts for those studies, and this fine text. Again, if you haven't worked with Matlab, you won't learn it with this text, and will get lost quickly. There are a number of inexpensive Matlab books, one specifically for neuro (MATLAB for Neuroscientists, Second Edition: An Introduction to Scientific Computing in MATLAB) if you find it used, and you'll need to brush up on the user interface. There are many online tutorials on it, and numerous books on the GNU version here on Amazon also.

If you can't find a good Matlab prep text, this is the best one I've read, used and found that is up to date and reasonably priced: Matlab, Third Edition: A Practical Introduction to Programming and Problem Solving. You don't really need the "neuro" version if you get Dr. Stormy's fine text.

The Matlab code in this text is at about 95% usable right out of the book. That is astonishing for a text, and some of the code runs the first time! Unheard of in most of the texts you get today that are rushed to press. Highly recommended with the right background or pre-reading/ supplementary prep.

I found a 1965 version of the Rational Manager at a garage sale for $1.00 and because I had taken the Kepner Tregoe problem solving training I bought it. What a great book! I then discoverd The New Rational Manager version and got it as well. The books present a very solid and structured methodology with great examples to illustrate their use.

The chapter on decision analysis provide insight into factors to be considered when making choices.

The Riddle of Amish Culture (Center Books in Anabaptist Studies), by Donald B. Kraybill

Since its publication in 1989, The Riddle of Amish Culture has become recognized as a classic work on one of America's most distinctive religious communities. But many changes have occurred within Amish society over the past decade, from westward migrations and a greater familiarity with technology to the dramatic shift away from farming into small business which is transforming Amish culture. For this revised edition, Donald B. Kraybill has taken these recent changes into account, incorporating new demographic research and new interviews he has conducted among the Amish. In addition, he includes a new chapter describing Amish recreation and social gatherings, and he applies the concept of "social capital" to his sensitive and penetrating interpretation of how the Amish have preserved their social networks and the solidarity of their community.

Review

This book is a perfect tool for introducing undergraduates to sociological analysis. Kraybill skillfully depicts an intriguing world that promotes collectivism against the dominant individualism. We come to understand how Amish life makes sense to those who adhere to it.

(Michèle Lamont Christian Century)

Beyond the tour buses and stereotypes lies the complex reality of Amish life. In this welcome update of a classic study, Donald B. Kraybill explores with deep insight and solid research the fascinating ways this fast-growing traditional community negotiates its evolving relationship with a modern world of business, tourism, shopping malls, and roller blades. No dry academic book, this beautifully written work exudes the juices of lived experience and conveys its author's profound respect for, and understanding of, Amish life.

(Paul Boyer, Editor-in-Chief, The Oxford Companion to United States History)

Carefully crafted, richly nuanced and accessible to both the informed reader and the novice, Donald Kraybill has once again produced a remarkably clear and meticulous study of one of North America's most intriguing religious minorities. The Riddle of Amish Culture opens a window into the complex reality of Amish society that crisscrosses the postmodern, modern, and traditional worlds.

(Thomas J. Meyers, Ph.D., Professor of Sociology, Goshen College, Goshen Indiana)

Donald Kraybill has written a brilliant exposition of Amish life. A sociological tour de force and must-read for those who wish to understand Amish culture.

(Peter Ester, Professor of Sociology, Tilburg University, The Netherlands)

I cannot think of a better way to introduce students to the richness of Amish life. The Riddle of Amish Culture takes the reader into the intricacies of Amish life and culture. Kraybill frames his rich narrative description with sophisticated analysis. While thoroughly accessible, Kraybill's book never insults the reader's intelligence. His treatment of Amish life resists stereotypes. In fact, he routinely explodes them.

(Stephen C. Ainlay, Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dean of the College, and Professor of Sociology, College of the Holy Cross)

The Riddle of Amish Culture is essential reading for anyone who wants to unlock the 'mystery' of a fascinating people whose simple, community oriented ways have much to teach us. Professor Kraybill's extremely informative book is a valuable resource, every semester in my classes for teachers.

(Ed Daniels, Lecturer, Stony Brook University, National Board Certified Teacher)

Kraybill moves seamlessly between the fascinating details of Amish life and the meaning of modernity, illuminating both as he informs and provokes in the best tradition of accessible scholarship. [His] masterful analysis of Amish life provides the perfect springboard for students to explore the meaning of modernity and to question the assumptions of their own culture.

(Marc Olshan, Professor of Sociology, Alfred University)

Kraybill's masterful analysis of Amish life provides the perfect springboard for students to explore the meaning of modernity and to question the assumptions of their own culture.

(Marc Olshan, Professor of Sociology, Alfred University)

Kraybill's study of the Lancaster Amish community is an excellent introduction to the Old Order world for both students and general readers. He enables us to see the Amish not as leftovers from the past, but as 21st century people whose confrontation with modernity is guided by the same devotion to religious principles that marked their ancestors as radicals. This book helps us solve the riddles of Old Order society.

(Karen Johnson-Weiner, Assistant Professor, Department of Anthropology, SUNY Potsdam)

Students of human nature and those baffled by the seeming inconsistencies of Amish culture will find compelling explanation in Donald Kraybill's The Riddle of Amish Culture. In the new research on youth groups, Kraybill explains how a time of testing the limits and tasting the fruits of worldliness in adolescence has a 'redeeming function.'.

(D. R. Elder, Professor of Humanities, The Ohio State University-ATI)

The well documented book is an excellent field trip. It includes informative chapters, excellent notes, thorough bibliography all presented with clarity and correctness.

(Richard Rouillard, Professor of English, Oklahoma City Community College)

From the Publisher
"The riddle of Amish culture in America is: how does it continue to dramatically prosper while unilaterally resisting the very core of mainstream American prosperity—technology? The surprising answer—adaptation and compromise—is given in loving detail in this great book."—Whole Earth Review

"Kraybill relies on his own and others' research, as well as on personal interviews with Amish men and women. The resulting book is a hybrid—written in a non-academic style that is appealing to the general reader who wishes to learn more about these unusual Americans, but also exploring the Amish in scholarly depth."—Philadelphia Inquirer

"A sophisticated portrayal of the apparently simple but actually very complex Amish . . . A well-illustrated guide, this work gives loving but unsentimental attention to the precarious culture under examination."—Christian Century

Engaging study of Amish relevance
By Paolo & Francesca
I couldn't have found a better book to introduce me to the Amish in America. Professor Kraybill's book is detailed, well organized, insightful, and well written. He illuminates Amish customs, beliefs, culture, and the ways the group has changed over the years. He answers the question, despite their peculiarity and restrictions on individual freedom, why have the Amish survived and thrived in modern times? High birthrates and low attrition have caused the Amish population to grow exponentially in the last century. Their venture into business, work ethic, and ability to adapt modern technology without compromising their values have enabled them to thrive financially. Most Amish are better off financially than moderns because they have a low cost of living, lots of help from friends and neighbors, and equity in the form of land passed down to them. Modern people have to deal with student debt, keeping up with consumer trends, maintaining an adequate wardrobe, high transportation and housing costs, high healthcare costs, etc. etc. Professor Kraybill emphasizes the benefits of Amish culture but also thoughtfully addresses the criticisms of Amish culture.

Even though Amish culture seems complicated with many rules and restrictions and confusing compromises, a few defining values guide their lifestyle. The first is the value of community over individualism. In Amish society, individual needs are subsumed to those of the community. The pursuit of personal achievements, higher education, artistic expression, and freedom of dress, occupation, and gender roles are curtailed in Amish society. But the individual receives many benefits from the community such as a sense of identity in a clearly defined culture; the closeness and support of family, neighbors, and church; a lifestyle that integrates work and home. The Amish value of humility explains their plain dress, their hard work ethic, and their eschewal of conspicuous consumption or anything that displays wealth or status. Even though some Amish may be very wealthy, they maintain equality in the community by using the same form of horse and buggy transportation, the same dress, and relatively modest furnishings in the home. Although trying to distinguish oneself through wealth, power, education is not allowed, the Amish also do not have members who are neglected or left in poverty. The sick and the elderly are cared for at home, and children are educated near the home, and those who experience hardship are given mutual aid.

The Amish seem strict in their rejection of technology but they have actually been very saavy in adapting to modernity. Technologies that enhance productivity have been adopted. Even though grid-powered electricity is not allowed, the Amish have adopted diesel powered engines, natural gas for heat and cooking, and air pressure powered appliances. Even solar and wind power are coming into use in the community. Modern furnishings, plumbing, use of medicines have made modern Amish life much more comfortable than in previous eras. What the Amish has preserved is their own education, religion, values, and sense of simplicity, equality, and community.

What would have made the book better is more case studies and more discussion of the drawbacks of Amish life. The Amish admirably avoids many of the ills of modern society. My feeling though, is that gender equality is absent in Amish culture, and they have no way of dealing with gay or transgendered individuals. What about the practice of shunning people who do not conform? Denying children the pursuit of learning or occupation of their choice, confining women to the home and raising large families, are rather problematic. A more honest discussion of these topics would have been good.

I really appreciated the discussion of Amish culture's relevance to modern society in the last chapter. The Amish serve as a foil to our individualistic and materialistic society. It helps us compare what works and what doesn't. Despite not having modern conveniences and personal choice, the Amish have high quality lifestyles where crime is low, divorce is low, poverty is low. While ambitious people would feel oppressed in Amish society, regular people also do not have to struggle so hard to have a basic standard of living. Their willingness to stay close to home has helped them build social and material capital over generations. The choice of the Amish to remain true to their traditional values is ironically modern because they understand what modernity offers them and have chosen another way. They are an important group to help us understand ourselves as much as they are fascinating on their own.

Thorough, expert description
By bookaddict
This is an extensive treatment of many questions relating to Amish culture by one of this country's foremost experts. It places the Amish in the historical context of the Anabaptist movement in Europe and covers differences in Mennonite and Amish communities in this country, although it focuses on the Lancaster Amish with whom Kraybill has worked most extensively. Kraybill uses sociological principles to explain practices that might seem inconsistent or contradictory; thus, he makes sense of the apparent riddles. I live in Amish country and found that this very informative book answered the questions I had developed over the years. The book would be especially interesting to those already interested in the Amish culture, but most Americans would benefit from some consideration of the value of living apart from the world with a focus on family, faith, and community as opposed to our obsession with materialism and individualism. Although it is more work to read a scholarly book like this, I think it is much more balanced and informative than some of the popular memoirs written by a single individual who has left the Amish community.

Note that this book has photographs and several diagrams and tables that are hard to view on the original Kindle. On the other hand, reading it on a Kindle makes it easy to search for important terms and historical facts presented earlier--important in an long book if you read it over several weeks, as I did.

Best book on the subject. No contest. Read this if you want to understand Amish culture.

If you're trying to make sense of a complex culture, especially if you expected it to be plain and simple, this is the book to read. I've bought (and read) many books related to the Amish, but nothing else matches this book for a thorough and in-depth picture of what makes them like us... and very different, too.
