Johnny Cash: The Life, by Robert Hilburn

The national bestseller celebrated as "the ultimate Johnny Cash biography....Rock writer great Robert Hilburn goes deep." -- Rolling Stone

In this, the definitive biography of an American legend, Robert Hilburn conveys the unvarnished truth about a musical superstar. Johnny Cash's extraordinary career stretched from his days at Sun Records with Elvis Presley and Jerry Lee Lewis to the remarkable creative last hurrah, at age 69, that resulted in the brave, moving "Hurt" video.

As music critic for the Los Angeles Times, Hilburn knew Cash throughout his life: he was the only music journalist at the legendary Folsom Prison concert in 1968, and he interviewed both Cash and his wife June Carter just months before their deaths. Drawing upon a trove of never-before-seen material from the singer's inner circle, Hilburn creates an utterly compelling, deeply human portrait of a towering figure in country music, a seminal influence in rock, and an icon of American popular culture. Hilburn's reporting shows the astonishing highs and deep lows that marked the journey of a man of great faith and humbling addiction who throughout his life strove to use his music to lift people's spirits.

Amazon.com Review
The Big Fall Books Preview 2013: To adequately describe Johnny Cash: The Life, it helps to begin with the author. For more than thirty years, Robert Hilburn worked as a music critic at the Los Angeles Times, rubbing shoulders with the greats of the industry--Dylan, Lennon, Joplin, Springsteen, U2, and many others. But this tenderhearted, penetrating biography stands as an argument that he knew Johnny Cash best. Cash was an unlikely artist, born in debt-poor Arkansas to cotton farmers. He began working (and singing) in the fields at the age of five; and from there, Hilburn--who counted Cash as a friend and was the only music journalist at the famous Folsom Prison concert--draws from his extensive personal interviews with the singer, as well as new material from Cash’s inner circle, to create a biography that is both compassionate and clear-eyed. As he details the stunning rises and tortuous stumbles of The Man in Black, Hilburn conveys an intimate, consuming, human portrait of the drama, the art, and the purpose that made the man a legend. --Chris Schluep

From Booklist
The bare bones of Cash’s story are widely known: the singer-songwriter’s childhood years as a farmer’s son longing to make music, his early hits, his descent into substance abuse, his tumultuous personal and professional life. Here, Hilburn, who covered music for the Los Angeles Times for more than 30 years, puts some meat on those bones. Did you know, for example, that when Cash moved to Memphis, he hadn’t heard of producer Sam Phillips, or Sun Records? And did you know that the lyrics of Cash’s early hit, Folsom Prison Blues, were lifted, not quite word-for-word, from Gordon Jenkins’ Crescent City Blues? The book is based on previously published material and on the author’s interviews, over the years, with numerous sources, including Cash and his family; Phillips; musicians such as Kris Kristofferson, Merle Haggard, Bob Dylan, and Tom Petty; and many of Cash’s friends and colleagues (each chapter is thoroughly sourced). It’s always tricky to call a biography definitive, but this one must surely come close. --David Pitt

"It's a rare gift to be given the opportunity to step far back from the confusing miasma of one's own childhood to see the entire soaring arc of a parent's life, and to be able to look clear-eyed at the puzzle of his character and the kaleidoscope of pain and beauty. This is the breathtaking gift Robert Hilburn has given me in a definitive biography of my father that is excruciatingly honest, rigorously researched, and has the depth and integrity that his subject demands. I had to take many breaks while reading this book to assimilate all the stories I knew, but had never put in a narrative context, being claustrophobically close to not only the events themselves but the resonance of those events. I felt dizzy from the sense of time travel and from the odd notion that Hilburn's masterful organization of the paradoxes and the fullness of who Johnny Cash was--and is--satisfies not only my father's family and fans, but himself as well. To those who fiercely cling to a one-dimensional view of my father to satisfy their own ideals--dark or light, saint or sinner, right or left--I challenge them to read this book and begin to understand a far, far more interesting and complex man: a truly great, visionary artist, a deeply flawed human being capable of experiencing inconceivable amounts of both love and pain, and a huge spirit who now belongs to the ages." -- Rosanne Cash

"Johnny Cash will be the definitive bio of the tortured, truculent but often generous singer.... Hilburn penetrates the heart of Cash's artistry.... The behind-the-scenes stories Hilburn unearths from those early days are engrossing for anyone interested in American roots music." -- Kirkus Reviews

"Johnny Cash and Robert Hilburn are two of the true blessings of my life. Both the best at what they do and each a gifted artist. It's a killer combination." -- Kris Kristofferson

"Assiduously researched and entertaining.... Hilburn rightly believes his subject's life is so extraordinary that there's no need for fanciful embellishment from anyone, including Cash himself." -- Entertainment Weekly

"The definitive work about Cash, a rich, engaging look at a very complicated man that is, by far, the best book ever about him and one of the best biographies, music or otherwise, that I've read.... It's a depiction of its subject that's as honest, revealing and resonant as The Man in Black himself." -- Lincoln Journal Star

"A deeply personal, multi-faceted portrait." -- Parade

"Johnny Cash succeeds at both expanding and complicating its subject. Hilburn does an artful, enviable job of reconciling all the facets...[It's] measured and mindful, allowing of all the paradoxical bits that constitute a human life." -- The Orlando Sentinel

"Between his love of music, his experience as one of the nation's leading music critics, and his long personal friendship with the subject, there is no one on earth more qualified to write this definitive book on the roller-coaster life of Johnny Cash than Robert Hilburn. Between the amount of research and the degree of detail he's put into this book, even Johnny would have learned something about himself if he were here to read it. Highly recommended!" -- Rick Rubin

"A definitive biography.... He tells, in great and sometimes harrowing detail, how Cash's professional advancement and personal decline blossomed simultaneously." -- The Washington Post

"A meticulous biography.... Hilburn gives a frank account of the singer's life...." -- The New Yorker

"Brilliant.... There are already over 50 titles written about or by Cash, yet Hilburn's work is a standout." -- Maclean's

"A thorough, compassionate and knowledgeable biography of an artist I knew well and admired tremendously... [Hilburn] pulls you into his story." -- Clive Davis

"The Man in Black's many fans will find this huge, sympathetic yet critical study of his serial rises, falls, betrayals and redemptions definitive." -- The Globe and Mail

Excellent Book - Couldn't Put It Down!
By James A. Meyer
I've read Robert Hilburn for more than 35 years, and have always found his writing to be accurate, fair, and passionate. While I've never been a big fan of country music, I've come to appreciate Johnny Cash more and more over the years - especially his American Recordings albums with Rick Rubin.

I learned so much about the origins of Sun Records, Cash's passion for underdogs, his battle with addictions, his need for affirmation, and his physical ailments at the end of his life. As a Christian, I was interested to see how Hilburn handled Cash's faith, which was quickly glossed over in the film Walk the Line. In my view, Hilburn bent over backwards to represent Cash's faith and love for gospel songs in a way that would have pleased Cash no end. I didn't sense one syllable of ridicule for Cash's beliefs.

Hilburn's extensive interviews with Cash's family members, friends, and females were enlightening and contributed toward a well-rounded portrait of the man. Their commentaries on key events in Cash's life added emotion and insight to his sometimes erratic behavior.

But what I appreciated most about this book is that Hilburn continually focused on Cash's music, quoting Cash's lyrics at key junctures and letting Cash explain why he wrote and played certain songs. Cash was always at its best when he was authentic, which is why I love the American Recordings albums so much ... usually just the man and his guitar. Since there are hundreds of Johnny Cash albums available on CD - many of them compilations - Hilburn's recommended purchases at the end of the book will save readers much time as they seek to delve into his music.

I appreciated Hilburn's previous book Cornflakes with John Lennon and love this book as well. Because Hilburn respects both his subject and his audience, this book deserves a wide readership. I tried, but couldn't put it down ... and most likely, I'll pick it up again soon. Like its subject, this book is a winner.

"THERE WILL NEVER BE ANOTHER MAN IN BLACK." MERLE HAGGARD.
By Stuart Jefferson
"He is what the land and the country are all about, the heart and soul of it personified...". Bob Dylan.

"It's called country music and western music, but the truth is it's American music. It speaks in story about America in a way that speaks to all of us, north, east, west, and south." Richard Nixon at a White House concert.

With the holiday gift giving season fast approaching, there's no surfeit of books on musical artists. Books on Charlie Parker, The Beatles, Duke Ellington, Robert Plant, Jimi Hendrix, and no doubt others will be on the bookshelves. But certainly one of the best is Robert Hilburn's book on Johnny Cash.

Hilburn began this book in 2009 when Cash's manager told him "only about twenty percent" of Cash's life had been told. While previous books on Cash put his life and music in some kind of perspective, Hilburn takes a slightly different approach. He reveals not just Cash's life in and out of music, but why Cash matters. This book is a penetrating look at the man behind the "Man in Black" myth. And Hilburn never lets the myth get in the way of the facts. He has known, interviewed, and simply talked with Cash during his long (50 years) music career. Using interviews from both the past and present Hilburn has gone deeper into Cash's life, and has shone a light on both the real Johnny Cash and his music.

The book is broken into five parts, each dealing chronologically with a specific period and events from that period of Cash's life. Events like Memphis and Sam Phillips, Columbia Records, the tune "Big River" and pills, June Carter, drugs and Carnegie Hall, Folsom Prison and marrying June, losing the muse, Rick Rubin, and the final days are just a few of the many headings of events in the five parts chronicled in this book. There's 16 pages of b&w photographs from throughout Cash's life, including an early photo of Cash in his Air Force uniform playing a fiddle. And another photo from 1980, of Cash and his wife facing away from the camera--her arm around Cash's waste--his hand squeezing her buttock. Also included are 5 pages of a "Guide To Recordings And DVDs", 16 pages of Source Notes, and an Index.

The book begins early in Cash's life in Dyess, Arkansas and his rural 1930's upbringing. From there Hilburn, in a no nonsense, straightforward writing style, constructs Cash's life not only as a musician, but as a man with human failings, wracked with guilt. But also here is Cash "the practical joker", the man who wanted to buy his parents "...a nice place so they could have modern utilities...", the man with pressures in his personal life (which in one instance led to Cash's love song "I Walk The Line"), and the man who abused narcotics (and the price he paid for that). But Hilburn also notes Cash's other "addictions"--reading scripture everyday, his devotion to music, and a man who cared about his fans (Cash, learning of fans who had traveled far to see his concerts, would pay their room and board). As Marshall Grant said of Cash--"He'd give you the shirt off his back, and if he was straight, everything else he had in his possession."

Hilburn also notes Cash's guilt at not being a better father and husband. Roseanne Cash was very helpful, giving Hilburn a better look at her father--even to the detriment of Cash and the family. Cash was in a never ending circle of "wicked behavior" and then deep repentance. Cash wanted to redeem himself so others might feel they too could be redeemed. But there was also the father who named his daughter after pet names for his wife's breasts--"Rose" and "Anne". The author also weaves the Carter family into the picture and the their effect on Cash both musically and personally. He also reveals that June Carter had failings of her own to deal with.

In tandem with a detailed look at Cash the man, Hilburn has also delved extensively into the music side of Cash--using the same straightforward clear prose. For me the book is at its best when Hilburn goes into detail about the business side of Cash's life. He essentially begins with Cash going to Memphis and hooking up with Sun Records, and continues with his early recordings and hits, leaving Sun and signing with Columbia Records, Cash admitting that some of his albums weren't very good, recording gospel albums which took the pressure off Cash to write more secular songs (and hopefully hits), the many concerts he gave (including of course the Folsom Prison concert which Hilburn attended), being dropped by Columbia and not doing well on the Mercury label, worrying that his music would be forgotten, the fact that the 70's and 80's were not a good time for Cash, that Cash wrote approximately 1,000 songs, and his meeting Rick Rubin at a time when Cash felt his career over.

The book begins to wind down with Cash returning home because of his worsening Parkinson's Disease, and the passing of June Carter--as Rick Rubin said at the time--"I didn't know if he was going to make it past this." But not before Cash recorded a large cache of songs with Rubin as producer/facilitator, including "The Man Comes Around", and "Hurt". Hilburn gives the reader enough details that help put Cash's music in a much clearer light--from both Cash's and his fans perspectives. Nothing seems romanticized--everything rings sure and true, interesting, and informative. Having such attention to detail brings both parts of Cash's life into a sharper focus than in previous books.

While some previous books have done a good/adequate job with Cash's life story, none have really put everything in such clear terms--his life outside of music, and the music itself. Its Hilburn's leaving aside the myth, his attention to detail and his unflinching way of laying everything out--good and bad--that makes this book the one to read if you're interested in a look beyond the "Man in Black."

"His most enduring legacy is that his message continues to spread." John Cash, son of Johnny Cash.

The Man in Black
By H. P.
Biographers of musicians tend to face the same basic problem: outside of their music and antics, musicians tend to be as boring as anyone else (and for many the music isn't of much interest). Johnny Cash was different. He was an intelligent man, devouring books on history and religion. He was an iconoclast, when musicians' views are more often as predictable and conformist as they are simplistic. He had a deep abiding love for and commitment to gospel music, despite resistance from the music industry and a spotty record of church attendance. He did, like so many musicians, have serious drug problems, but Hilburn doesn't make that the focus of his biography. Rather, he keeps the focus exactly where it should be--on the music. It's a testament to the strength of Cash's songwriting that Hilburn can include so much of so many songs. They work as well as poetry as they do as songs, even the ones I wasn't yet familiar with.

Cash was a titan of music. What other musician could you write a 700 page biography on that would feel shallow in parts. Cash's career spanned across so many decades (from the 50s on) and trends in music (rockabilly to folk to outlaw country) and he interacted with so many other great musicians (from Elvis to Bob Dylan to Kris Kristofferson) and public figures (Nixon and Billy Graham) that inevitably something will leave you wanting more. Hilburn hits the most important points well, though, from the prison shows to Cash's passion for the downtrodden to his drug addiction (at too great length, that, but that's Cash's fault) to his triumphant final act with Rick Rubin. The book is packed with vignettes, like Cash being one of only three musicians to write Steve Earle a note while he was in jail for cocaine and weapons possession. Hilburn writes it all well and with a deep knowledge of the music (if with = a hint of snobbishness).

I own the 1997 version and ordered 2 copies of this newest version
By Woodlandtrails
I own a 1997 version of this book and used it too many times to count both for myself and for literally hundreds of others over the years. But debt laws changed some for the better and some for the worst.

When this newest version came out, there was no hesitation. I ordered one for myself and another for relative who went though a bad unemployment patch when the economy hit the skids.

It makes me sad to see lawyer hucksters on TV saying they can stop collection calls etc IF YOU PAY THEM when all a person has to do is write a "certified" letter themselves telling the creditor to stop contacting them by phone, at their work, etc and only contact them by mail. That ends it without a dime spent. If it doesn't - record the calls and sue them in small claims court since the creditor SIGNED FOR THE LETTER and you have proof they signed and win thousands. The vast majority of debtors STOP though.

It angers me when IDIOT government civilian bureaucrat office personnel insist other employees pay for old debts on their credit report or risk losing a clearance WHEN THAT DEBT is more than 7 years old and should NOT be there. Or, it is so old it will fall off (when prompted) because it is almost 7 years old by doing nothing and sometimes the person NEVER made the debt and the collection agency targeted them instead of the person it belonged to. Paying ONE PENNY towards a debt RESTARTS that 7 years it is on a person's credit report and every small payment pushes that 7 year time line that debt is on your credit report further out hurting the person.

Sometimes - it is best NOT to pay bills. I negotiated with hundreds of creditors that IF they are paid in full(or even partial paid), they must remove the bad debt from credit report and agree to that credit removal IN WRITING before one cent is paid to them. Many LIE and say it is illegal to remove it from credit reports - YAWN - hang up knowing in a few years - it will be removed by law anyway. Why hurt yourself and pay a creditor just to damage your credit further by having it remain on your credit report for 7 MORE YEARS from the date you paid it. Dumb!! I cleared up many a friend and relative with the 1st book. Look forward to doing the same with the newest edition.

BTW, I am keeping my older version because there is still quite of bit of useful information in it.

Great Book!!
By mediajax
Good Find! I came acroos hard time things just kept getting worse imagine having someone knocking at your door on a Saturday Morning with a summons to 5 year old debt that was never resolved correctly. I was beyond frustrated and embarrassed!!
I could not afford attorney and friends gave me books by finance gurus like Suzy Orman and Dave Ramsey to fix past credit FUBARS but I would just get lost in terms and opinions none are as helpful as this book.
Reading this book gave me the confidence to take charge of my life again and get rid those abusive collectors that brought stress to me and my family.
I love the way this book puts everything in Layman's terms and allowed me to follow along without many diversion, opinions and fluff. I get distracted easily and loose interest OK call me ADD...now where was I? To my surprise I started this book and was unable to put it down. I followed the step by step instructions and it actually worked for me!!!!
I am so happy now I have taken control, I also brought my score for years at 527 up to a 640 in months and recently got approved for an FHA loan. I still can't believe it I highly recommend this book.

Repairing Financial Health
By Jess S Geller
This country does an injustice to many people by not giving them the basic tools to manage their finances when they are in high school. We teach HS students about history, math, English and how to play sports fairly but we do not teach them how to manage a household budget and how to save for the future "rainy day". Instead, we let young adults go into the real world unequipped to handle their finances. Maybe this is by design as a capitalist system depends on the ignorance of the masses to buy, buy, buy and consume, consume, consume to keep the money engine moving along.

It is because of this problem of financial illiterate Americans that books like "Credit Warfare: Retake Control Of Your Financial Life! (Volume 1)" need to written. I applaud Mr. Blisko for writing this book to help people get out of the financial ditch that they created for themselves. Bad credit is like bad cholesterol. It needs to be treated. With a proper diet of financial discipline and using the "medicinal" information Mr. Blisko provides, people can get financially healthy and get back to living productive and satisfied lives. Mr. Blisko is clearly an expert on this subject and he shares his knowledge with the reader in an easy to read manner. As noted in the book description, this book will help you sleep at night.

Secrets from the Eating Lab: The Science of Weight Loss, the Myth of Willpower, and Why You Should Never Diet Again, by Traci Mann

A provocative expose of the dieting industry from one of the nation’s leading researchers in self-control and the psychology of weight loss that offers proven strategies for sustainable weight loss.

From her office in the University of Minnesota’s Health and Eating Lab, professor Traci Mann researches self-control and dieting. And what she has discovered is groundbreaking. Not only do diets not work; they often result in weight gain. Americans are losing the battle of the bulge because our bodies and brains are not hardwired to resist food—the very idea of it works against our biological imperative to survive.

In Secrets From the Eating Lab, Mann challenges assumptions—including those that make up the very foundation of the weight loss industry—about how diets work and why they fail. The result of more than two decades of research, it offers cutting-edge science and exciting new insights into the American obesity epidemic and our relationship with eating and food.

Secrets From the Eating Lab also gives readers the practical tools they need to actually lose weight and get healthy. Mann argues that the idea of willpower is a myth—we shouldn’t waste time and money trying to combat our natural tendencies. Instead, she offers 12 simple, effective strategies that take advantage of human nature instead of fighting it—from changing the size of your plates to socializing with people with healthy habits, removing “healthy” labels that send negative messages to redefining comfort food.

Is Your Diet Making You Fat?

From her Health and Eating Laboratory at the University of Minnesota, Professor Traci Mann researches self-control and dieting. And what she has discovered is groundbreaking: not only do diets not work, they often result in weight gain. We are losing the battle of the bulge because our bodies and brains are not hardwired to resist food—in fact, the very idea of it works against our biological imperative to survive.

In Secrets from the Eating Lab, Mann challenges assumptions—including those that make up the foundation of the weight loss industry—about how diets work and why they fail. As Mann explains, most weight loss plans are reliant on the notion of willpower—and willpower is an illusion. Moreover, even when we are able to successfully lose weight, our bodies fight our efforts, seeking to regain the weight we've worked so hard to lose. In the end, we become chronic "yo-yo" dieters, destined to lose and regain the same pounds time and again. The diet industry is well aware of these facts and has tellingly built their business model on the concept of the "repeat customer"; they know we'll be back.

The result of more than two decades of research, Secrets from the Eating Lab presents cutting-edge science and offers exciting new insights into the American obesity epidemic and our relationship with food. From redefining "comfort food" to reconsidering healthy food labeling that, ironically, makes us less inclined to make healthy choices, Mann presents an arsenal of simple, common-sense strategies that take advantage of human nature instead of fighting it—helping you to achieve a healthy and sustainable weight.

Sneaky Experiments & Pracitial Ideas From the Eating Lab
By Bassocantor
SECRETS FROM THE EATING LAB is a very unique book. I don't believe I've ever read a book on eating that is based upon research from an eating lab. The author conducted her experiments on eating in a pretty sneaky way: "I tell our research participants that we are studying other things entirely, such as their memory or their moods or how they communicate with their friends. But being the hospitable people we are, we just happen to offer them snacks while we study them. They have no idea that it's what they do with these snacks that were really studying. "Sneaky, sneaky!

The author admits she was very surprised by her findings: "Much to my surprise, I've learned that nearly everything I thought was true about eating was false. "Perhaps one of the most important conclusions of this book regards the failures of diets: "The most rigorous diet studies find that about half of dieters will weigh more for 25 years after the diet ends than they did before the diet began."

One of the big problems with diets is that diets cause stress. But a stress response itself is something that leads to weight gain! "Stress cannot be avoided when you are dieting because dieting itself causes stress. Dieting causes the stress response that has already been showed to lead to weight gain."

One of the recurring themes of SECRETS FROM THE EATING LAB is how realistic your weight goal is. Your realistic weight is highly correlated to the weight of your biological parents. She cites studies with twins who are living in separate homes. They discovered that the weight of the twins was very similar to each other, even though they had been raised in separate households.

The author estimates that your genes account for 70 percent of the variation in your weight. It's not that you can't affect your weight at all but that what you can change is probably a lot more limited than you think: "Your body is trying to keep you within that genetically determined set weight range."

The most controversial part of this book will certainly be Dr. Mann's assertions about obesity. She points out that the scientific evidence does not really support the idea that all obesity is unhealthy. The author cites a study which found that overweight people actually had a slightly lower risk of death than normal weight people. In fact, "being overweight appears to be even a bit healthier than being the recommended weight." The doctor clarifies that it's not slightly obese people that have the health risks--it's what are called "Class 3 Obesity." And only 6 percent of the US population is in that category.

A surprising finding from the author's research is what is called the "obesity paradox." This section of the book was a real eye opener for me. Here's the paradox: Obesity in America has greatly increased over the past few decades. One would think, therefore, that the rate of diabetes would have skyrocketed, but it has not. Dr. Mann points out that the prevalence of diabetes went from 9% to 11%, and that the rate of cardiovascular disease actually decreased.

Dr. Mann recommends that you aim for your lowest realistic weight--not some idealistic weight that is not actually attainable. Rather than going on and off diets, you exercise, eat nutritiously, avoid weight cycling, and get proper medical care. She gives lots of practical suggestions on how to do this. For example, remember that the actions of people around you do has a great impact on how you eat.

The author is a big proponent of regular exercise, even though it doesn't usually lead to big weight loss. The benefits of exercise are numerous, the author points out. Simply put, "Exercise prevents death," and exercise "works as well as drugs in preventing death among people with heart disease, stroke, or pre-diabetes." In addition, "Exercise helps even if you don't lose weight." Exercise also helps reduce stress. You really do feel better on a regimen of exercise.

The author has some final words for the reader in the section called "Final Words: Diet Schmiet." She really discourages the reader from trying to go on diets: "Diets don't work. Big deal. You don't need them to work. You need to not go on them." Instead, she suggests, "reach your leanest livable weight, that comfortable weight at the lower end of your set range. You'll have no trouble reaching it if you exercise regularly and use some of the smart regulation strategies in this book to create reasonable eating habits."

All in all, I found SECRETS FROM THE EATING LAB to be a surprising book, with some very unusual conclusions. The author's experience and qualifications are solid, but this book is bound to be controversial, because it takes aim at some of the core assumptions in the health/diet world.

Advance copy for impartial review.

I really enjoyed it and found much of it very interesting
By Classic Firm Lover
This is one of those books I wish I could give 3.5 stars. I really enjoyed it and found much of it very interesting. I'd say it's better than three stars, but not quite four. Mann does recount some very enlightening studies and I think hits the nail on the head that much of our problem is a fixation on weight, appearance and unrealistic expectations of what we 'should' weigh. I love that she encourages the reader to strive for a 'lean livable weight' and just kind of get over the whole weight thing. Life is so much more important than a number on a scale and to those aspects I give a hearty 'hurrah.' Also, I applaud Mann's easily readable and entertaining writing style.

However, her suggestions on how to arrive at this lean, livable weight leave something to be desired in my opinion. Mann suggests a series of behavioral modification techniques, such as eating off smaller plates or avoiding the route home that passes by the delectable bakery, but honestly, these suggestions fall into the 'nothing new' category. She seems incredibly reluctant to suggest ways of eating that might involve any kind of restriction, which I think might be what people actually need to do to find this 'leanest livable weight.' I don't mean to suggest draconian diets, the avoidance of which is obviously the point of the book, but our modern way of eating is problematic. I don't think it's just because we're eating off big plates. We have a food quality problem, not just quantity.

We're eating out more. We're not cooking as much from scratch, we're eating more packaged foods, industrial oils that contribute to inflammation and just WAY TOO MUCH SUGAR, in all it's forms, especially high-fructose corn syrup. It's hiding in everything from chicken broth to peanut butter. I know Mann is not a medical doctor or nutritionist, so maybe that's why she's reluctant to offer any dietary suggestions other than the play-it-safe recommendation to eat more vegetables.

For example, she recounts the story of a man who told her he had lost significant weight by eating only twice a day. He had noticed a pig he had raised grew up healthy and lean from only eating twice a day, and so he tried it. The strategy was very effective for him, yet Mann says it's not something she would recommend because eating just twice a day 'sounds miserable.' I appreciate that she's going for sustainability here, but still, there is some good science backing up infrequent eating! Putting some significant time in between meals--especially a full 12 hours between dinner and breakfast--is a sound strategy. I find I need to eat more than twice a day, but I try to avoid snacking and put as much time between meals as I reasonably can. Getting back to regular meals is realistic, and sustainable. The snack manufacturers have convinced us we need to graze all day, which is neither true nor wise. What a missed opportunity not to share that in the context of this story!

I did enjoy the book. I do recommend it, but wish Mann had gone a little farther in her recommendations.

Fascinating account of why diets fail and how fear of obesity is making things even worse
By Todd I. Stark
This is a very well written and uniquely informative book in a field glutted with opinions and weak and conflicting advice. It is not a how-to book on losing weight, although it has a few solid behavioral suggestions for making modest healthy changes. This is primarily an interpretation of much of the available evidence regarding obesity and health by psychologist who runs an eating lab at the University of Minnesota and publishes a lot of scholarly peer reviewed work in the field.

Although she is a researcher, Dr. Mann takes pains to distinguish herself from obesity researchers with a public health focus who are motivated to warn people about the dangers of increasing body fat. Her interpretation of the data is often the opposite in some ways from theirs, she sees the growing incidence of body fat and she sees the growing incidence of adult onset diabetes, but she reports that the link between body fat and health problems is far weaker than is implied by the rhetoric of most obesity researchers and much weaker than the popular impression has become. In addition, our efforts to fight obesity have, she concludes, actually become counter-productive because of the manner in which we typically attempt to fight our own biology by restricting calories and exercising in ways that increase our stresses and increase our preoccupation with food, and that both of these things feed back into exacerbating the original problem.

The book starts off ripping into both the commercial diet industry and the focus of a lot of articles by doctors and obesity researchers by announcing that their "3 pillars" are all simply false:

1. That some diets work for losing weight
2. That some diets are healthy for losing weight
3. That obesity itself is deadly

Among the central and most compelling aspects of this book is where Mann observes that our ideal body image often tends to be outside of the range that we can reasonably sustain. And this becomes confused with health concerns and fed by commercial interests. We could transform our bodies potentially through diet and exercise, but at the cost of altering or entire lives in the service of that goal and experiencing extended self-denial and obsession with food.

And the clincher for her argument is that all this self-denial and obsession would be mostly serving our aesthetic ideal rather than actually improving health. She finds that according to best available evidence upon close inspection mortality is not significantly improved by losing weight, unless you are already extremely obese and still have a long life ahead of you. The population in that category is far smaller than the one targeted by both the diet and fitness industries and most obesity researchers.

Mann finds that diets consistently fail in two ways: (1) only a tiny percentage of dieters retain their weight loss, regardless of which diet it is, and (2) even when people lose enough weight to satisfy the goals of improving their risk profile, they rarely lose enough to satisfy their aesthetic preference. This means that according to the person themselves, their diet failed even when for health purposes it succeeds. Our aesthetic goals trump our health goals for the purpose of satisfaction with the diet.

If we should want to attempt small changes that help us regulate our own eating so we can maintain a sustainably lower body weight, Mann offers several well-tested behavioral suggestions along the lines of "nudges" that help us avoid being triggered to eat excessively.

I think her principles seem sound and her use of evidence is compelling. I would say that anyone who wants to lose a few pounds permanently would probably benefit from the sort of cognitive-behavioral suggestions Mann gives in her book.

I do have a criticism of her otherwise superb and unique exposition though.

She argues for a set point model of body weight regulation that maintains our weight within a fairly narrow range but she doesn't really address the obvious question of why people are statistically getting fatter if we are so consistent at maintaining our weight in such a narrow range. She puts most of her focus on obesity not being as deadly as it appears except at the extreme, and she explains why people can't simply diet away unwanted body fat, but she doesn't at all dive into the reasons for our growing bodies.

That's a big topic and it isn't her area of research so I can understand leaving it to others to try to explain, but for me it left a logical hole in her argument that begs to be filled and should have been addressed with at least some general thoughts. She should have touched on the moving of "settling points" that move somewhat rather than implying a single weight range exists for each person. Clearly that range shifts under different clusters of life conditions. That's not just important because we need to explain why we get fatter. It is also important because we need to explain the few outlier cases where people do successfully make the changes needed to lose very large amounts of weight and keep it off for years or decades. They are I think becoming different people in a sense, with different weight regulation settling points resulting from different activity patterns and eating habits and different environmental conditions. She doesn't really seem to allow for that at all. Her insistence that a "diet" doesn't allow for that may give a misleading impression that people _never_ successfully lose significant weight for the long term. That is clearly not true. Playing the odds is fine, and we need to be realistic about what is required, but knowing why the outliers succeed is important as well.

The reason she is right most of the time I think is that it is a lot more work than we expect to be able to do the experimentation and learning and self-observation needed to learn to avoid temptations and prepare our own food in a nutritious way and so on, and as she says, "diet" to most people means eating certain things, not engaging in a challenging ongoing learning process and strategically altering clusters of habits. If you expect to do that sort of thing, then I think it is entirely possible to shift from one "settling point" to another to lose a lot of weight over time and keep it off. She is right that if you do this kind of staged life adjustment to become very lean, you will have a much harder time maintaining it in general until it becomes a developmental change. She is right that this cannot possibly be done in most cases simply by acts of discipline. You have to become smart about it.

I honestly couldn't believe that this was happening. I was touching and kissing another man. And letting him touch and kiss me. I should be properly horrified and pushing him away. But I wasn't. I was allowing him to touch me, to kiss me, to touch me where only I and my girlfriends have touched me. And I liked it. And I wanted to touch him. I guess Stevie had been right when he said who better than to try out your curiosity than your....

Steamy rocking bodies
By Melissa
It was a really good book, but the only downer was the girlfriends. The guys are wonderful together and as seperate people but why did they feel that it was okay to keep going with their affair when both had girlfriends. There is experimenting and then moving on, but they are not moving on with it they plan to continue. I hope they find happiness, but they need to pick either each other and break up with the girlfriends, or the guys just need to be best friends again.

Best Guy Friend...
By E. Katt
That phrase is used way too often! It was entertaining to watch these two best guy friends (see what I mean?) experiment with each other and then try to justify their actions. They are so cute in their delusions of heterosexuality. I got a good laugh, so there you go.

Short but worth it

I received this book for an honest review. I enjoyed reading this book, I would have liked more from it though. The characters were well suited, although I felt they were cheating on their partners. And look forward to reading more from this author

The best Scala book!
By Duy
Scala is a sophisticated and deep language, I like it and I tried with several books but I almost gave up at 1/2 of them because at that place, I lost my understanding about insight of languages and cannot follow the rest anymore.
With this book, it is amazing as I finally understand companion objects, why we need Nil at the end of List, then general rules of parentheses (not brackets!), then right operand and so on!
I am not finished this book yet, it is a big book but fun to read and can learn from every pages (at least, to chapter 16).
An absolute recommend!

This book is great. So well written
By Nathan Mccoy
Seriously. I've probably read 50 or 60 books on various aspects of software development in my lifetime. This is in the top 3. This book is great. So well written. Great pacing. Every step builds on the next. Prose is written clearly and concisely - much like the language itself. Also, occasional bits of humor make their way into the text and it always delights. Great book. You should buy this.
