American Dreamer: My Life in Fashion & Business, by Tommy Hilfiger, Peter Knobler

In this tale of grit and glamour, setbacks and comebacks, business and pop culture icon Tommy Hilfiger shares his extraordinary life story for the first time.

Few designers have stayed on top of changing trends the way Tommy Hilfiger has. Fewer still have left such an indelible mark on global culture. Since designing his first collection of “classics with a twist” three decades ago, Tommy Hilfiger has been synonymous with all-American style—but his destiny wasn’t always so clear. Growing up one of nine children in a working-class family in Elmira, New York, Tommy suffered from dyslexia, flunked sophomore year of high school, and found himself constantly at odds with his father. Nevertheless, this self-described dreamer had a vision and the relentless will to make it a reality. At eighteen he opened his own clothing store, parlaying his uncanny instinct for style into a budding career as a fashion designer. Through decades of triumph and turmoil, Tommy remained doggedly optimistic. To this day, his approach to commerce is rooted in his positive view of the world.

American Dreamer brims with anecdotes that cover Tommy’s years as a club kid and scrappy entrepreneur in 1970s New York as well as unique insights into the exclusive A-list personalities with whom he’s collaborated and interacted, from Mick Jagger and David Bowie to Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein. But this is more than just a fashion icon’s memoir—it’s a road map for building a brand, both professionally and personally. Tommy takes us behind the scenes of every decision—and every mistake—he’s ever made, offering advice on leadership, business, team-building, and creativity.

This is the story of a true American original, told for the first time in his own words, with honesty, humor, and the insatiable appetite for life and style that proves that sometimes you have to dream big to make it big.

“Tommy burst onto the fashion scene at the height of hip-hop and was instantly taken up by rappers and rockers alike. Since then, year after year he has been ahead of the curve with his elegant and stylish looks. His creative energy has always been an inspiration to me. CHAPTER ONE

Imagine

I was always planning my escape. Mostly I dreamed. I took myself out of where I was and put myself somewhere else. How could I sneak out of school that afternoon? Where was I going that weekend? Where was the party? I dreamed of cars, sports, girls; of making money, enjoying life, being a rock star. I saw myself on a boat in the Bahamas and felt the wind in my face, heard the sails flap as we came about, looked up the mast into the white clouds and blue sky. I was there.

I had eight brothers and sisters, and one Sunday morning my father was driving all of us in the station wagon to Denton Hill, a ski area in Pennsylvania, our gear crammed in the back and on the roof. As everybody vied for attention, I gazed out the window and saw a cabin on the side of a mountain. I pictured myself in that cabin, but in my mind, the cabin was decorated like a Swiss chalet and there was a fire blazing in a big stone fireplace. My skis were on the front porch, ready to go. I wanted to be in the ski patrol, so I pictured my backpack filled with a Swiss Army knife, a first-aid kit, a walkie-talkie, and a fold-up tent. I could smell the pine trees, see the bright white snow, feel the towering evergreens. I don’t know where the details came from; I was obsessed with Walt Disney movies, so probably from them or The Sound of Music. I dreamed so often I developed a photographic memory. I saw a scene, clicked it in my mind, and it was there forever. The colors, the feel, the shine, the patina. All right there.

My father, Richard, a watchmaker and jeweler, was not a man for fantasies. He said I had to learn a trade so I could have dependable work and make some money in this life.

“What’s a trade?”

“You learn to be a mechanic, or work in a machine shop, or be a carpenter.”

I didn’t want to be a robot, to wake up in the morning and do the same thing every day. Shop was better than sitting in algebra class, but it wasn’t a lot of fun. And I was looking for fun.

Home was not fun.

I was born in 1951 and grew up in Elmira, New York, in one half of a side-by-side double house at 921 Laurel Street, off Pennsylvania Avenue. My father’s family was German Bavarian and Swiss; my mom’s came from Ireland and Scotland. My maternal grandmother’s maiden name was Burns, and on the Scottish side we’re supposed to be related to the poet Robert Burns, but that was never spoken about in our house because Robbie Burns had a reputation as a womanizer and a drinker. The whole family, all eleven of us, ate dinner every night around one big table, and chaos reigned. At any given time there were a couple of babies in high chairs; I would be teasing my sisters, trying to make them laugh; one of my brothers could be flying across the floor; the noise level was high and buzzing. But when my father came home and slammed his fist on the table, everybody went silent. He would be the last to sit down, usually in a foul mood. We were all nervous around him, and in our nervousness we would giggle. Which infuriated him, which made us giggle even more, which made him even madder. Every night we tried to hold it together, and every night we made our father furious.

When we were alone, we would ask my mother, “Why is Dad so angry?” My mother, Virginia, a registered nurse who worked the six-to-eleven night shift, came home, made breakfast for all of us, and didn’t get a lot of sleep, always found the good in everything. A petite woman with chestnut brown hair and one green eye and one brown, she was kind, warm, sensitive, and loving. Mom was a true saint.

“Dad’s store is air-conditioned, and when he comes home it’s not air-conditioned here, sweetheart.” That was why he was angry in the summer. “The driveway hasn’t been shoveled. It’s icy, dear.” That was why he was angry in the winter. Dad was in a bad mood every season, pretty much all the time.

My father liked to go out with his buddies. They would play cards, shoot skeet, go to the bar, and bet on sports. He had a life outside the home that excited him—he was handsome, impeccably dressed, and loved by everyone who knew him. Around neighbors, customers, and friends, he was perfectly charming. At home he was something else, and no one saw it but us. With a mortgage to pay off and clothes for nine children to provide, home was expensive. He had been raised Protestant and converted to Catholicism when he married my mother, and he followed those rules, but Richard Hilfiger surely did not seem happy with his life, and although with so many children he was a good provider, I doubt he had wanted nine kids. Coming home was facing reality. When his car drove up the driveway each night, we all scattered and hushed.

If I left my bicycle in the driveway, if my shoes were on the stairs instead of in my room where I was supposed to put them, if I kicked my sister—about once a week from the time I was five until I was eleven, my dad punished and spanked me—hard. I hated and feared him, and I never wanted to be in his presence. I became an expert at hiding from my father when he was in the house. I was a phantom, a ghost. I dodged him because I never knew when he was going to find something I had done wrong and go at me.

My mother was so kind and loving, she didn’t like the physical punishment. She knew it was wrong. Her way of trying to protect me was to tell her husband quietly, “Enough.” She tried to smooth over our relationship, but I was always worried that I would set him off, and every week he proved my fears correct. Whether I was my best self or not, my father scared me every day of my life.

When there are nine kids in the family, things are complicated. Each of us had a distinct role in the household, but I’m not sure there was any rhyme or reason to them. Kathy, the firstborn, was creative and had great taste. She was constantly rearranging the house, a lamp here, a table there, moving the couch to the other wall. She kept everything clean and was every bit the student my father demanded that she be. She was also very aware of the effect of wealth, because we didn’t have it. She would point out how other people dressed, where they lived, how they lived: “Oh, look, they have a nice car”; “They have a beautiful home and a swimming pool”; “Their father is a doctor. They must be rich.” My older sister passed that awareness along to me. We would look at the children of business owners, and they would be well dressed and well groomed and living in nice houses, and we’d think, “They are perfect.”

Kathy tried out for the high school cheerleading squad at a time when cheerleaders were the apex of beauty and was extremely upset when she didn’t make the cut. But she was a good gymnast, so they asked her to be the Elmira Free Academy Blue Devil, the mascot. She was very attractive, but she never thought she looked good. She just didn’t realize how beautiful she was.

I was the second child, two years younger, and I couldn’t do anything right. I failed miserably in school, and though I tried hard and played with passion, I wasn’t an athlete. This pained my father to no end. One of Dad’s best buddies was Maury Collins, whose son Charlie was a great athlete. Maury would talk about Charlie and his football all the time. I think it got under my father’s skin because he couldn’t brag about me. Coaches would tell me, “You’re too short for basketball” or “You’re not big enough for football,” and I didn’t like baseball. There was nothing I was good at. Dad would tell me all about the other kids in the neighborhood: “Tommy Lynch is brilliant!” “That Scotty Welliver is a hell of a boy!” “Jimmy Rogers is a great basketball player!” Then he would look at me with disdain. I didn’t know what I had done to cross him, but by the time I reached junior high school it was clear to me that there was nothing I could do that would ever make him look at me in a positive way. So I stopped trying.

My sister Dorothy, born a year after me and named after my father’s mother, liked the name Susie, and requested that everyone call her that instead. She’s been Susie ever since. Susie was the smart one. Curious, adventurous, and popular, she was anything but a bookworm, yet she amazed everyone with her consistently stellar grades. She had a quick wit, a big crowd of friends, and an answer for everything. My father had a soft spot for her because she was often ill as a child and finally, in her teens, was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.

Meanwhile, I was a dreamer. I had to be, because I couldn’t understand what everybody else was grasping. English, history, math—I just couldn’t follow the texts. When I tried to read a book, I’d make it two pages into a chapter and start reading from the bottom up. My eyes would jump from one line to another. I would land in the middle of a page and start reading upward. Sometimes I would start at the right side of the page and read backward—and I could not control it.

I wanted to learn. I was curious. I guess you could call me nosy, but I was always extremely interested in what was going on around me. And because I couldn’t get information the way everyone else did—my dyslexia wasn’t diagnosed until much later in life—I picked up on vibes, facial expressions, and body language and developed my own personal radar to carry me through. I faked it.

I’d sit in Mr. Huber’s high school math class and think about everything but algebra. It was so confusing to me—2x over y, squares, square roots—and I couldn’t help but worry, “If I get through this, I have to go do geometry!” There was no way I could pay attention; every time I tried, it confused me even more. So I just decided to show up, guess at answers on tests, and see what happened at the end of the year.

I saw other kids in the class getting it. When Mr. Huber passed out completed exams, I looked at their test papers and saw they got 90s. Mine would be full of red ink and a grade of 35. And while he was going over the answers and the students around me were correcting their mistakes and making notes for next time, I’d stare at my teacher’s Thom McAn shoes, his brown polyester trousers, his white wash-and-wear shirt, his wash-and-wear tie, and think, “Mr. Huber really must be a good Sears customer!”

Some teachers were sympathetic, because they were nice people and I was a likable kid, kind of a jokester. I had a lot of friends, and we had as much fun as possible without getting thrown out. I was good at imitation, and when a teacher would turn around to write on the blackboard, I was the one who would copy his gestures or mimic his voice to get a laugh, mostly to evade the fact that I was not doing well in school. I knew that they thought that for this boy there was probably not much hope.

I would sit in class, look toward the blackboard, and not even see it. What was the point? I couldn’t read worth a damn. But I could tell you exactly what the teacher was wearing.

One of my major embarrassments was having to repeat sophomore year. Even worse, I had failed into my kid sister Susie’s class; worse still, she was getting 90s, and I was lucky to get 50s.

Susie also had great taste in clothes. She was conscious of how colors coordinated, and she knew and cared about brands and took care of the contents of her closet and dresser. Susie folded each of her sweaters perfectly, was always precisely aware of what she had—my earliest recollection of inventory control—and guarded her wardrobe zealously; she didn’t want any of her sisters touching anything. There was a lot of talk among the girls in my family about clothing and style and what people were favoring. Without them I probably would not have paid a lot of attention, but hearing the chitter-chatter all the time certainly had an effect. A boy with five sisters knows things other boys don’t.

My sister Elizabeth—Betsy—came along four years after me. She looked like a Hilfiger, but with red hair, blue eyes, and freckles, she was more striking than the rest of us. Not only was she a real beauty, but Betsy was sweet, kind, and caring. She was organized and disciplined, the mirror image of my mother, and became my mother’s main helper. When I came home from school and there were fresh cookies or brownies or a cake on the counter, Betsy and Mom had been at it together. Betsy became the Hilfiger historian; anytime anyone wants to know about the family, she’s there with the info.

My brother William Henry was born a year after Betsy. Meticulous even as a little boy, Billy loved to sketch and draw, and he was excellent at math. When we first got jobs, my sisters and I would take the money we’d earned and go out and buy something. Billy saved every penny. Sooner or later my sisters and I would outspend our earnings.

“Billy, can I borrow ten dollars?”

“Yeah, but I need it back by Tuesday, or I’ll charge interest.”

Two years after Billy, Bobby showed up. A ball of pure energy, he destroyed several cribs—he shook and rocked them apart because he just didn’t want to be inside!

Bobby was always a wiry, frail kid, but when he got to junior high school he started lifting weights and building muscle. By sophomore year he was pretty buff. He was a great natural athlete and a daredevil with no fear at all. Bobby had a funny and sweet nature, and as he grew older he started getting into trouble. We had a motorized minibike, all of us kids’ favorite mode of transportation, and my father would say, “Don’t go in the road with it. You’re not allowed in the road.” Well, Bobby would get on and hit the road. When he’d get back and my father tried to raise a hand to him, Bobby would push Dad off or run away. I could never do that.

Bobby made the football and the wrestling teams. Junior year he was a wrestling star. Senior year he won the New York state championship and earned a junior college scholarship to the State University of New York at Delhi. Bobby was a two-time National Junior College Athletic Association All-American wrestler at Delhi and set the record for the most wins at the NJCAA National Wrestling Tournament. He was selected to the Region III 1970s All-Decade Wrestling Team and earned a place in its Wrestling Hall of Fame. SUNY Delhi named him Athlete of the Year in 1979. He transferred to Appalachian State, in Boone, North Carolina, and won back-to-back Division I national championships. My father finally had a son to brag about. I was happy for Bobby and happy that my dad was in a good mood.

Exceptional Book of Childhood Experience Leading to Success
By J. Michael Nace
This is a surprisingly well written book. It moves quickly and never drags. In the beginning Tommy mentions he has been given a photographic memory wherein his mind takes pictures of what he wants to remember and after reading this book that may be the explanation for the incredible amount of detail, names, dates/events/ and locations mentioned in this book. I cannot recall any book in recent memory quite like this. The book is a page-turner with a tremendous amount of family information with insight and honest commentary. Tommy grew up as an artistic young person absorbed and fascinated by fashion and by 18 years of age began his first clothing business. He seems to be gifted mentally and creatively coupled with passion and motivation to pursue his dreams which has paid off. This is a man gifted with intuitive and creative gifts coupled with unusual motivation and drive. I found his childhood memories and experiences never really left him, making the book unusually human and moving. You get the feeling you know Tommy as a person after reading this book due to the intimacy an detail he brings to the reader. The last 30% of the book is more business oriented due to buying and selling options but ends again with family issues and the ultimate consumation of his amazingly successful run and success.

A Good Read
By Very Picky Shopper
This is a good read if one is interested in fashion from beginning to end. Also, TH shares his creative thinking from the birth of a thought to the
final design and the world travelling to find the fabrics, etc., to how the pieces are fashioned. He shares his life well. . . .

Mr Hilfiger i presume
By Shane Dane
this book is a collection of names, turn to the back and look at the acknowledgements as well as mounds of lovely photos, this book is about money and celebrity in that order. I went to one of his first stores, San Francisco in 1987 and he saw me wearing a beige bomber jacket of his in Washington DC in 1992 so I am definitely down with his "core basics." In fact, I bought so many things at his DC store, the manager had to tell me to stop. Someone should have done that with this book. With all the Suzies and Leslies, hard to know who he's married to or who he's related to, hopefully not both. He's devoted to daughter Ally and her battles with Lyme disease bring out all of the right instincts. Also, I have to think his backer Mr Murjani, who also made Gloria Vanderbilt jeans, made more money off him. From 70s head shops to Puff Daddy and JLo in the 90s, Mr Hilfiger is always on trend, he even got into a fake internet feud with Oprah. As for this book, long may he wave. What he dreamed about all those years ago in Elmira with his horrible father and loving mother (I can relate), he made those dreams come true so maybe we can do it too? Hope so.

Conversational Arabic Quick and Easy: Palestinian Arabic, the Spoken Arabic Dialect of Palestine and Israel, Palestinian Colloquial, West B

Have you always wanted to learn how to speak the Palestinian Arabic Dialect but simply didn’t have the time?

Well if so, then, look no further. You can hold in your hands one of the most advanced and revolutionary method that was ever designed for quickly becoming conversational in a language. In creating this time-saving program, master linguist Yatir Nitzany spent years examining the twenty-seven most common languages in the world and distilling from them the three hundred and fifty words that are most likely to be used in real conversations. These three hundred and fifty words were chosen in such a way that they were structurally interrelated and, when combined, form sentences. Through various other discoveries about how real conversations work—discoveries that are detailed further in this book—Nitzany created the necessary tools for linking these words together in a specific way so that you may become rapidly and almost effortlessly conversant—now.

If your desire is to learn complicated grammatical rules or to speak perfectly proper and precise Arabic, this book is not for you. However, if you need to actually hold a conversation while on a trip to the Holy Land, to impress that certain someone, or to be able to speak with your grandfather or grandmother as soon as possible, then the Nitzany Method is what you have been looking for. This book is recommended for those who already have some prior knowledge of the pronunciation of Arabic accents (such as the Arabic accents: ayin, ghayn, ha, and khaf). For those of you who do not, this book does indeed provide some great, in-depth techniques on the pronunciation and recognition of these accents, that you will encounter throughout the program. These techniques have proven extremely beneficial for beginner students who were previously unfamiliar with these accent pronunciations. But keep in mind this isn’t a pronunciation book. Palestinian Arabic slightly varies throughout different areas of Israel and Palestine, the dialect in this book is of the central West Bank (Ramallah/Bethlehem area) dialect. In Palestinian dialect, verb conjugation is irregular and this book will NOT teach you those skills since this is NOT a grammar book.

This method is designed for fluency in a foreign language, while communicating in the first person present tense. Nitzany believes that what’s most important is actually being able to understand and be understood by another human being right away. Therefore, unlike other courses, all words in this program are taught in English transliteration, without having to learn the complex alphabet. More formalized training in grammar rules, etc., can come later.

This is one of the several, in a series of instructional language guides, the Nitzany Method’s revolutionary approach is the only one in the world that uses its unique language technology to actually enable you to speak and understand native speakers in the shortest amount of time possible. No more depending on volumes of books of fundamental, beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels, all with hundreds of pages in order to learn a language. With Conversational Arabic Quick and Easy, all you need are fifty-three pages.

Review
"A Simple Heart" ("Un Coeur Simple"), by French writer Gustave Flaubert, is one of the stories in his Three Tales (Trois Contes), published in 1877. It received admiring reviews at the time and has continued to be second only to his novel Madame Bovary (1857) in recognition and acclaim.

Originally entitled "Le Perroquet" ("The Parrot"), "A Simple Heart" is the story of one woman's apparently fruitless existence. The protagonist, a hardworking, good-hearted, poor and uneducated woman named Felicite, is said to have been modeled after a maid employed by Flaubert's family during his childhood, a much beloved woman of tremendous character. The story is unusual among the author's writings because it is about goodness. In this story of a simple housemaid's life and death, the reader is invited to view a world of boundless, if not reciprocated, love and spirit. Felicite, a woman of simple mind and devoted heart, suffers tremendous loss but continues to her last breath to love unconditionally. Some critics have suggested that Felicite's apparently meaningless life and misplaced worship of the parrot, Loulou—whom she adores and whom she imagines, in her dying moment, to be an incarnation of the Holy Ghost—reflect Flaubert's melancholy and disillusionment with life and with organized religion, particularly the Roman Catholic Church. Most critics agree that this is a poignant account of a sweet, simple, and unrewarded life, one which may have been happy precisely because it was unexamined. It does not matter that Felicite may have misinterpreted or simply not interpreted many of the events in her life: she dies smiling, and thus lives up to her name to the last.

About the Author

Known for his scrupulous devotion to his art and perfectionist style, French writer Gustave Flaubert is counted among the greatest Western novelists, and influenced such writers as Franz Kafka and J. M. Coetzee. Flaubert is best known for Madame Bovary, for which he was prosecuted (and acquitted) for offending public morals. His other works of note include Memoirs of a Madman, November, Salammb?, Sentimental Education, and The Temptation of Saint Anthony. His work has been widely adapted for the stage and screen. Flaubert died in 1880.

Short But Powerful and Impressive
By Jack Ridley
Gustave Flaubert (1821 to 1880) was a French writer who is still considered to be among the greatest western novelists. He authored Madama Bovary which is considered to be the perfectly balanced modern novel. That novel and the author's style and approach has been hailed by a range of writers and critics including, for example, Saul Bellow, who modeled his own novels from Flaubert's works. Fluabert's writings have been referenced by Nabokov and many others as being an inspiration to a whole century of Western writers, and helped to launch the age of realism in novels.

The present story comes from the 1877 publication Three Tales (Trois Contes. It consists of the short stories: Simple Heart, Saint Julian, and Herodias. Dance of Death is another story sometimes grouped with Simple Heart and Saint Julian as Three Short Works.

A Simple Heart was inspired by biographical events in Flaubert's own life: he lived in rural Normandy, he had problems with his studies similar to the character Paul, and he was prone to epileptic seizures similar to the protagonist Felicite.

I read the story first without looking at any analysis, made up my own mind, then read the analysis. What struck me was that Flaubert had crammed a whole lifetime of human emotions into a single very short story. That all by itself was impressive. How could someone come up with that idea? Amazing.

A Simple Heart, also called A Simple Soul or Un Coeur Simple, in French, is a story about a girl named Felicité. She is a servant who has lived with the same family ever since she was betrayed by her lover. She has a strong sense of loyalty and self sacrifice: she lives to help others.

This short story has been admired by many critics over the years and used as a basis or a source of inspiration for other stories.

This takes only an hour or so to read and is highly recommended.

Short and simple tale
By Leapin' Literary Lurkers
Flaubert has always been one of my favorite authors. This brief glimpse of a servant's dedicated life demonstrates the closed world in which she lived illuminated by her mistress' children and a beloved parrot. It deals with the pangs of loyalty and death in a soul of limited compass. A simple life in all regards.

Truly a Simple Tale of a Simple but Strong Woman
By Patricia
A very brief little book - and it is hard to imagine that it is from the author of Madame Bovary! It traces the life of an uneducated, ignorant but strong and faithful French country woman who spent her life in service, both as a maid to the woman she worked for over many decades, and to the relative that she loved and finally even to her pet parrot. Her uneducated faith was her guiding principle and she was always an untiring worker. It will probably make you think of someone you have known - if you are lucky enough to have known such a person.

Gene Tierney: A Biography, by Michelle Vogel

Called the most beautiful woman in movie history, Gene Tierney starred in such 1940s classics as Laura, Leave Her to Heaven and The Ghost and Mrs. Muir. Her on-screen presence and ability to transform into a variety of characters made her a film legend. Her personal life was a whirlwind of romance (she married a count, was engaged to a prince, and was courted by a future president) and tragedy (her first daughter was born with severe retardation and Tierney herself struggled with mental illness). After years of treatment, including electroshock therapy that erased portions of her life from her memory, she triumphantly returned in one of the biggest comebacks in Hollywood history. This first complete biography since the actress's death includes a foreword by her daughter, Christina Cassini, an extensive filmography, and many rare photographs.

An Undistinguished Portrait
By J. Michael Click
Michelle Vogel's long-awaited book about the life of Gene Tierney is a monumental disappointment, both as a biography and as a reference guide to the actress' distinguished forty-year career on stage, screen, radio, and television. In terms of recounting the story of Tierney's turbulent life, there's very little new material here for readers familiar with the existing Tierney literature, and unfortunately, the author offers few fresh insights into the actress' personality. Most of the book simply recounts events and conversations already covered in Tierney's 1979 autobiography; a perusal of the Bibliography also discloses that the author included many old movie fan magazine articles among her sources.

Factually, the book is riddled with errors in terms of dates and chronology. For example, throughout the text, Vogel refers to award years according to the dates the ceremonies were held rather than the period for which work is being honored. Thus, Vogel states: "Gene lost the 1946 Academy Award for Best Actress to Joan Crawford ..." when in truth, Tierney lost the 1945 Academy Award for Best Actress to Crawford at the ceremony held on March 7, 1946. Similar discrepancies appear throughout the text. A more serious gaffe appears in a photo caption (and is repeated in the filmography) where it falsely states that "Hudson's Bay" was filmed before "The Return of Frank James"; curiously, this error is (correctly) contradicted within the text. Conversely, Vogel fails to mention or explain why "Dragonwyck" (filmed February - May 1945) was pulled from its scheduled September 1945 release date (after having been favorably reviewed by the press) and was shelved by 20th Century-Fox until Easter 1946; and she completely omits any mention within the text of Tierney's appearance on an episode of "G. E. Theatre", which served as the actress' 1960 comeback vehicle after years of treatment for mental illness.

While the photographs in the book are adequately reproduced, many of them - including the bulk of the film scene stills - will already be familiar to dedicated Tierney fans, and do not justify the book's high suggested retail price. Nor does the filmography serve as an adequate selling point; it is filled with errors and required more careful proofreading prior to publication (release and premiere dates are frequently incorrect; top-billed Jean Simmons and Victor Mature have been dropped from the cast listing for "The Egyptian"; cast and production credits for Tierney's television appearances are not included, etc., etc.). Overall, this book is regrettably not recommended. Gene Tierney and her legion of fans deserve much better than what is offered here.

Melodramatic and Error-prone
By Howard
After having carefully combed through this book, I am very disappointed with my purchase. I've read Gene Tierney's autobiography 5 or 6 times, and kept referring back to it as I read this new biography. Michelle Vogel repeats many specific passages from Tierney's book: for example, both authors conclude the story of Gene's acting being complimented by Noel Coward with a reference to the actress' Aunt Lelia thwarted theatrical ambitions ("If only Lelia could see me now!"). And Vogel recounts quotes made by Tierney differently than did the actress herself: for example, Tierney says she answered John F. Kennedy's question about the end of their romance being final by saying simply "It is," while Vogel writes that Tierney repeated the phrase, declaring "It is. It is." It's this kind of soap operatic invention that makes Vogel's reporting both suspect and overly melodramatic.

About half of the much-lauded photos in the book were familiar to me from other publications. The most interesting of the photographs are the personal and candid shots. I had hoped to find a photo of Tierney and Kennedy together, but none was included. The extensive filmography in the back of the book is full of errors and typos: the names of actors and their characters are frequently incorrect. (Dana Andrews played Thomas Crail in BELLE STARR; that's John Shepperd in RINGS ON HER FINGERS; the portrait of Gene in LAURA does indeed appear in the final cut of ON THE RIVIERA; THAT WONDERFUL URGE is based on the 1937 Tyrone Power vehicle LOVE IS NEWS; the top-billed cast members in the listing for THE EGYPTIAN are missing; etc. etc.) Most perturbing of all is the mangling of dates concerning the films were released and awards were given out.

Overall, this was a far cry from the definitive biography of Miss Tierney that I had expected when I bought it. Those looking for a scholarly reference-quality volume will not find it here. Those who are less exacting about accuracy and fond of florid sentimentality may be more appreciative of this pricey tome.

Good Pictures, But Largely Superficial and Disappointing
By A Reviewer
The strengths of the book are the pictures of Gene Tierney and the filmography in the back with some interesting tidbits. However, the book is largely superficial, and contains relatively little information beyond that included in Ms. Tierney's autobiography published in 1979.

One of the major disappointments is that beyond her former husband, and a few people in Houston where Gene settled in retirement, the author apparently conducted very few, if any, interviews of people who worked with and knew Ms. Tierney. Yet there are many actors, actresses and other film professionals living today who worked with and knew Ms. Tierney. They could have shed a lot more insight on what Gene was really like, as well as her acting ability and style.

The book, in general, lacks much, if any, analysis of Gene's acting talent and style or the qulaity of her films. There were many themes that could have been pursued, such as why the quality of her roles declined sharply after 1948, as well as her relationships with her co-stars, but in general, this was not done. There was also relatively little about her life after 1960, beyond what was already included in the 1979 autobiography. (Ms. Tierney died in 1991.) In addition, the author did not include notes on sources of information, as would be expected in a more thorough book.

As someone who was eagerly awaiting the publication of this book, I was disappointed. There's just not much depth in the book. Without the filmography and the index, the book is less than 200 pages.

Farm to Fable: The Fictions of Our Animal-Consuming Culture, by Robert Grillo, Carol J. Adams (foreword)

Why do the vast majority of us continue to consume animals when we could choose otherwise? What are the cultural forces that drive our food choices? These are the fundamental questions Farm to Fable seeks to answer in two ways: by asserting that our beliefs about eating animals remain largely unexamined and therefore unchallenged, and by demonstrating how the fictions of popular culture continually reinforce these beliefs and behaviors. Farm to Fable deconstructs these fictions for those who truly want to know not only where our food comes from, but also why we make the choices that we do. For seasoned animal advocates as well, this book will provide important insights.

Review
Robert Grillo has written a challenging and provocative expose of the unconscious beliefs we hold that allow us to feel superior to animals and entitled to abuse and consume them. This is one book that is sure to be controversial. --John Robbins, author of Diet for a New America, and president of the Food Revolution Network

Through exhaustive research and keen observations, Robert Grillo shines a light on what is hidden in plain sight. He deftly exposes the ugliness of animal agriculture with sensitivity and compassion. An essential read for anyone who considers themselves a conscious consumer. --Colleen Patrick-Goudreau, animal advocate, ethicist, and best- selling author of The 30-Day Vegan Challenge

Farm to Fable is an easy-to-read, accessible book that will compel readers to think deeply about the nonhuman animals they choose to eat. Grillo clearly highlights the fiction and lies behind many of those who claim that it s possible to give food animals a better life when we are concerned with their welfare. Read this book and share it widely. It could be a game-changer. --Marc Bekoff (marcbekoff.com), evolutionary biologist and author of Rewilding Our Hearts: Building Pathways of Compassion and Coexistence

Farm to Fable is his first book. He lives in Chicago.

They can feel, but can you reason?
By vivere
If reason, facts or good sense and morals could change people’s behavior, the world would be quite different. In recent years, many sociologists conducted studies that showed that humans can hold contradictory beliefs and that are guided by ideology, religion or generally group identification. Many studies consider climate change and evolution as examples. Even educational level does not seem to have a decisive effect.

Robert Grillo deals with the same phenomenon, but one that is really the elephant in the collective room of our species. He analyzes the apparent causes and manifestations of human indifference and delusion regarding our use and abuse of farm animals.
Although the books is exhaustive in its coverage of the various issues, my favorite chapter is chapter 3 on the Foundational Fictions. In it, the author exposes the fictions regarding anthropomorphism, consent, objectification, naturalism, euphemisms, blurring the line between plants and animals, pseudonaturalism and its variants, fictions related to hunting, necessity, social justice, domestication, and so on.

Other chapters deal with animal cognition, the humane meat fictionalization, the fictionalization of animal identities and the fictionalization of the ritual of consumption.
Grillo writes in a transparent prose with clear arguments and a calm voice. He tackles head on, concisely and effectively all the rationalization, justifications, euphemisms and mythology that the purveyors of animal agriculture and scions of capitalism have instilled in our culture and in our individual psyches.

Those who come to the book with open minds will find themselves reconsidering their behavior. Those who have already acted on the well known facts of animal farming and changed their diet to avoid animal parts and extracts will find an informative, well-argued and mind stretching exposition.

Highest Praise for Farm to Fable: The Fictions of Our Animal- Consuming Culture
By Linda Rapp Nelson
Robert Grillo has written an incredibly well thought out and compelling book on just how we have come to turn farmed animals into commodities for our use and how we justify it. His very clear and direct style makes for easy reading that informs and analyzes human behavior and attitudes on every page. This is a book that ought to be in the library of every vegan, animal rights activist, and seeker of truth out there; it will make it more likely that those who have the chance to read this book will self identify as all three when they are done. I will confidently hand this book to any pre-vegan who lets me know she or he is ready to learn more about the fables we tell to justify our use of the bodies and lives of others for what we do not need. This is an important book.

An inspirational book
By Laura
Robert Grillo writes everything that I feel about this subject but in such an eloquent manner. Everybody should read this book especially meat eaters. I think this book would appeal to people who have kind hearts but just need a shove up the backside to see the bigger picture. Nice references to popular culture such as films like the Matrix. I can relate to this from past experiences. Love the reference to the juxtaposition of food packaging. Like Mcdonalds Happy Meals and milk cartons showing happy cows, chicks. When in actual fact we are eating dead animals.

Not a preachy book. It’s just factual and looks into our psychology to why we choose to consume and use animals in such a way.
An inspirational book because it’s not just a book suggesting that we re-think how we consume and use animals but it is a book that looks into our own psychology.

I have bought several copies of this book for friends. The book also shows that there is hope and that we will be able to one day shift our beliefs about eating and using animals.

For all students interested in the "study of life"......
By P. Tirabasso
Dr. Burk Dehority's manual for Classification and Morphology of Rumen Ciliate Protozoa is a must for any student of Rumen Microbiology. It compares nicely to many of the wildlife and outdoor guides leading the observer step by step to a definite identification of rumen ciliate protozoa to a species level. This manual is comprehensive, detailed and easy to use. Dr. Dehority's attention to detail and his ability to focus on important features of the ciliates show the perfect union of an artist and scientist. His Procedures section at the end of the book provide the student with all the "recipes" needed to make some discoveries of their own.

Seems pretty dumbed down for a college course
By TaterTot
I had to buy this for a college music appreciation class. While not having a 1000 page, 15 pound book in super small print was a nice change, I found the text to be over simplified for a college class. Not sure why the professor chose this particular text, since I'm sure there's more thorough books out there. This book seems to be geared more towards high school kids, or smarter-than-your-average-bear junior high kids.

This book is a good place to start if you want to learn the most basic of basics, especially if you use the CDs also. It's pretty nifty that CDs are incorporated into the text...like, "If you want an example of a Gregorian Chant, listen to track 19, oh and by the way, here's the history of this particular song." It covers a decent amount of ground as far as learning musical terms, characteristics of different kinds of music, etc.

As far as history goes, it's pretty much completely European and American oriented, as if those are the only two places in the world that create music. The history is fascinating, but very limited in scope.

A final tip--buy this book used, like I did. $10 is all you should pay for this book and the CDs, not $100.

Great textbook
By Jane McKee
Excellent textbook to accompany my music appreciation class last semester. The book is structured in an easy-to-follow format that begins by teaching the elements of music, giving the student a good basis of knowledge to learn about the musical periods.
