Preface Goal, Theme, and Approach

The Internet is profoundly affecting almost all businesses and commerce paradigms. Global competition, industry traditions, laws, and consumer preferences are among the many issues being impacted by e-business. Weekly magazines and newspapers have dedicated large amounts of space to discuss e-business and the new economy. Newspapers publish news about e-business almost every day. However, there is good news and bad news. The good news is many innovative people are constantly creating new and exciting ways to use the Internet to provide novel, efficient, and convenient shopping paradigms as well as streamlining ways for businesses to do business with their partners. The bad news is the most successful e-business sites are at greater risks of being overwhelmed by large numbers of customers who can potentially bring the site operation to a halt. Scalability is then a challenge to the success of e-business. Our primary goal in writing this book was to create a framework in which e-business scalability could be discussed and evaluated.

This book presents a quantitative approach to understanding and analyzing e-business scalability based on a four-level reference model. The four-level model is composed of a business model, a functional model, a customer behavior model, and an IT resource model. This framework is used throughout the book to explain how e-business technologies work and how they impact performance, to characterize and forecast the workload of e-business sites, and to plan their capacity with the use of performance models.

New performance metrics for e-business are presented in the book. Models at the various levels of the reference model are used to represent and understand problems in e-business. These models include customer behavior models (e.g., Customer Behavior Model Graphs and Customer Visit Models), Client/Server Interaction Diagrams, and analytic (e.g., state transition diagrams and queuing networks) and simulation performance models. The combined use of these models provides a framework for assessing and evaluating the scalability of e-business sites.

Many examples derived from real e-business situations are used to illustrate the concepts presented in the book.

Who Should Read This Book

This book can be used by graduate and senior-level computer science students as well as students in e-commerce programs offered by business schools. Students of MBA programs with a concentration in information technology will also benefit from the concepts presented in this book. Many professionals can use this book as a reference or as a way to learn about e-commerce technologies and the quantitative methods used to evaluate and size e-commerce sites. Examples of such professionals include Webmasters of e-commerce sites and ISPs, CIOs, system architects, project managers of e-commerce companies, e-commerce application developers, capacity planners and performance analysts, designers of Internet-based products for e-commerce, and e-commerce consultants.

Book Organization Part I: Modeling for E-Business

Chapter 1 presents a framework for analyzing and designing e-business sites. The framework is based on a four-level model that includes a business model, a functional model, a customer behavior model, and an IT resource model. The chapter discusses various types of electronic markets including various types of business-to-business, business-to-consumer, and consumer-to-consumer markets.

Chapter 2 discusses the motivations for capturing user behavior and presents customer models at various levels. The models presented in this chapter can be used to answer what-if questions at the customer behavior level and can serve as a basis to build models at the resource level. Two types of customer models are presented in this chapter: the Customer Behavior Model Graphs and the Customer Visit Model.

Chapter 3 discusses the anatomy of e-business functions from the logical view point. The chapter describes how software servers interact to implement e-business functions and provides a graphical notation—the Client/Server Interaction Diagrams—to describe these interactions. Several numerical examples illustrate how these diagrams can be used to answer quantitative questions about the execution of e-business functions.

Part II: Evaluating E-Business Infrastructure and Services

Chapter 4 describes the various elements that comprise the IT infrastructure needed to support e-businesses. The discussion includes hardware, software, and networking issues. Multi-tier website architectures, composed of dynamic load balancers, Web servers, application servers, and database servers, are described.

Chapter 5 presents a quantitative analysis of authentication services used in e-business. The chapter shows how the mechanisms and protocols used to support security may impact system performance. Many quantitative examples illustrate the tradeoffs between performance and security. In particular, the chapter analyzes how authentication protocols such as the Transport Layer Security (TLS) protocol, a successor of the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) protocol, affects performance.

Chapter 6 provides an overview of what happens when one uses a credit card for payment in the physical world. Then, it discusses how Secure Electronic Transaction (SET) allows for credit card payments to take place over the Internet. The chapter describes SET at a high enough level of detail to provide the reader with an overall picture of the protocol as well as its performance implications. The performance of SET transactions is then discussed through various numerical examples. The chapter concludes with a brief discussion of other payment services.

Part III: Capacity Planning for E-Business

Chapter 7 contains an example-driven description of a capacity planning methodology for e-businesses. The methodology is composed of three planning activities: business and functional planning, customer behavior planning, and IT resource planning. Each of these activities is described in detail and illustrated with examples.

Chapter 8 provides insight and intuition regarding how simple performance models can be constructed, solved, and used in the context of electronic business environments. The fundamentals of performance models are then introduced. These include concepts such as service time, service demand, waiting time, response time, throughput, and performance laws. Scalability analysis techniques based on the study of performance bounds is presented here.

Chapter 9 starts by introducing very simple models. Complexity is progressively introduced and the solution to each model is presented using first principles and intuitive concepts. Two broad categories of models are covered in this chapter: system- and component-level models. System-level models treat the actual system as a black box that receives requests, processes them, and returns the results. Component-level models, based on queuing networks, in which components are represented by queues, allows one to explicitly represent processors, storage subsystems, networks, and routers.

Chapter 10 uses several examples to illustrate the performance impacts of contention for software resources (e.g., threads of a software server, database locks, and semaphores). Performance models that deal with software contention may be based on approximate analytic models or on simulation models. This chapter gives an overview of the techniques used to solve approximations that represent the effects of software contention. To show the impact of software contention, we discuss various results obtained by a combination of simulation and analytic models.

Chapter 11 presents a methodology for characterizing e-business workloads. In particular, the chapter shows how Customer Behavior Model Graphs (CBMGs) and Customer Visit Models (CVMs) can be obtained from HTTP logs and describes methods, based on clustering analysis, to derive small groups of CBMGs or CVMs that accurately represent the workload. The chapter also shows how the parameters for the resource models (e.g., queuing network models) can be derived from customer behavior models. Chapter 12 discusses techniques that can be used to analyze and forecast the demand for e-business sites. The chapter discusses traffic burstiness, traffic patterns in e-business, and forecasting techniques including regression methods, moving averages, and exponential smoothing. Logs of a real e-tailer are used to illustrate the traffic characteristics of an e-business site.

Part IV: Models for Specific E-Business Segments

Chapter 13 illustrates the use of the quantitative methods presented in the book through several examples in the business-to-consumer segment. A hypothetical electronic retailer is described. Then, different planning situations are discussed. In light of the models introduced throughout the book, we show how to tackle the problems and we present their solutions. The goal of the chapter is to guide the reader, in a step-by-step manner, through the model-based solution of a number of e-commerce examples.

Chapter 14 illustrates the use of the quantitative methods presented in the book through several examples in the business-to-business segment. An example of supply-chain integration and made-to-order computers is used to illustrate how capacity planning can be carried out in business-to-business environments. The chapter also shows how business-to-consumer transactions generate business-to-business transactions.

Part V: Summary, Challenges, and Perspectives

Chapter 15 concludes the book with a summary of important points covered in the book, challenges for e-business, and future perspectives. Appendix A contains a glossary of the important terms introduced in the book.

Excellent performance &n capacity approach for app layer
By Mike Tarrani
This is one of a series of books about performance and capacity metrics by the authors. Each of their books covers a specific environment (client/server, mainframes, web services), and each explains the theory, quantitative methods and practical approaches using common tools like Microsoft Excel.
This book's focus is on performance and capacity of applications in the e-commerce infrastructure, and like the other books by the authors, it covers every facet while explaining the what's and why's. More importantly, this book will not overwhelm readers who are rusty in math because the authors weave in refresher material as they go along.
What makes this book valuable is the blend of business and technical topics, particularly in Part I where business models are thoroughly discussed. I personally believe that this material is as important as the more technically focused material in subsequent chapters because it wakes up the technical reader as to why their job of developing scalable solutions is important by linking the technical aspects to business imperatives.
Parts II (Evaluating E-Business Infrastructure and Services) and III (Capacity Planning for E-Business) are the heart of the technical matter, and the chapters systematically dissect each aspect of an e-commerce infrastructure from the application layer point of view. This is where quantitative methods are introduced and where the value of the spreadsheets on the CD ROM increase. Note that there are more up-to-date versions of these spreadsheets on the book's associated website, as well as errata for the book.
Practical considerations that blend the business and technical perspectives are presented in Part IV (Models of Specific E-Business Segments). This chapter consists of case studies that tie together all of the preceding material using real world examples.
Because this book is more focused on performance and capacity at the application and business model layer, you should read the authors' newest book, "Capacity Planning for Web Services: Metrics, Models, and Methods". That book covers the lower level details of the infrastructure
to round out the picture of an end-to-end view of performance and capacity management.

Architecture of E-Business Systems
By Odysseas Pentakalos
Both "old" and "new" economy companies are scrambling to develop e-business systems to take advantage of the Internet revolution. This is the first book in the market to provide a framework that systems architects can use to build scalable solutions or to enhance the user experience of existing systems. There are academic papers that cover related topics at a very abstract level to be of practical use and similarly, there are practical articles that cover very specific topics. This book is a very nice compromise between those two extremes. I found the chapters on characterization of e-business workloads and on the development of performance models to be especially useful.

Scaling for E-business: Technologies, Models, Performance, a
By Harrell J. Van Norman
Best book in print for designing e-business networking systems. This book leads a designer of E-business solutions through the steps necessary to ensure QoS objectives are meet, performance requirements are satisfied, and networks aren't over engineered. As an instructor of E-commerce Network Engineering for the Univeristy of California, I'm familar with current published literature, and there isn't anything out there that compares in clarity and completeness. This is Daniel Menasce's third book on the subject, and his best by far. On my short list of must read books for network engineers and system architects of E-business solutions.

Wingnuts: Extremism in the Age of Obama, by John Avlon

Wingnuts exist on the extreme edges of the political spectrum. They’re the professional polarizers and the unhinged activists, the hardcore haters and the paranoid conspiracy theorists. They’re people who always try to divide us instead of unite us. And at a time when the fringe is blurring with the base, they’ve hijacked American politics.

The Obama era has been a boom-time for Wingnuts, kicked off by a financial collapse and the election America’s first black president. For some, losing an election feels like living under tyranny. John Avlon tracks down preachers who pray for the president’s death, goes inside the growing “Hatriot” militia movement, and identifies the fright-wing swamp where the Obama “Birthers” and the Bush-era “9/11 Truthers” bubble up.

Wingnuts echo earlier fear-fueled movements in American history. But bolstered by the rise of hyper-partisan media, the Wingnut echo chamber is more influential than ever before and it has led directly to the division and dysfunction in Congress. Avlon asserts that the time has come for the moderate majority of Americans to straighten their civic backbone and hold the extremes accountable while restoring a sense of perspective to our politics.

Review
President Bill Clinton
"Wingnuts offers a clear and comprehensive review of the forces on the outer edges of the political spectrum that shape and distort our political debate. Shedding more heat than light they drive frustrated alienated citizens away from the reasoned discourse that can produce real solutions to our problems."

I think he got it right
By Stephen Tobey
Conservatives will probably say the book has a liberal bias. Liberals will probably be somewhat disappointed.
The author tries very hard to go after extremists on both sides. The problem, however, is that if you don't clearly take a side, everyone assumes you're biased against their side.
He tries to be a voice of sanity and goes after truthers as well as birthers (and also correctly points out that the birther movement was started by a Hillary Clinton suppoter).
I especially like the part where he examines three of the most over-the-top complaints about Obama: that he's a Communist, a Nazi and the Antichrist, talking to actual Communists and Nazis.
I doubt the book will change many minds. I've long felt that as much as people say they want civility, they really don't. They want the name-calling and demonizing of the opposition. Many of them, I'm sure, would think less of Ronald Reagan if they knew he routinely had a beer with Tip O'Neil at the end of the workday (or deny that ever happened).
Still, when all you hear from one side or the other is how the country is being destroyed and the sky is falling, it's refreshing to hear some more reasonable voices.

Wingnuts brings us no closer to the middle
By Andrew
Avlon has his heart in the right place, but the execution misses the mark. When bookshelves are dominated by legitimate wingnuts, its refreshing to see this book, calling for what essentially amounts to a third-party, one not beholden to irrational extremists. Millions of independents are waiting for a group of intellectual leaders preaching moderation and rationality. I certainly appreciate Avlon as he attempts to lead the charge.

Content-wise, I found the first half of the book uninspired. He spends endless pages quoting the nutcases he finds at rallies and town halls. Sadly, he adds little of his own insight. The net effect is that you feel like you're at a zoo, marveling at curious creatures from a distance. Fine, but we've all been exposed to these "wing-nuts" on television (either put into positive light by Fox News or cast as morons by MSNBC). If you're politically aware enough to pick up this book, you're already aware of all of its contents. This book is essentially a series of conceits, an opportunity to look down on the Sarah Palin's and Glenn Beck's of the world in order to feel some sense of moral superiority. When Avlon DOES come up with his own hypothesis, it is merely a rehash of Paul Krugman's theory that Republicanism has devolved into racial fear-mongering (to be fair to Avlon, he only really pins this generalization on the new fringe of conservatives). I wasn't impressed when Krugman wrote his political theory, and I'm not impressed now.

Stylistically, I understand what the Daily Beast is doing. They want to translate a series of blog articles into the print world, increasing the speed of publication, allowing on-topic books to hit the shelves while they're still pertinent, while gaining some intellectual capital. This didn't work for me. The chapters FELT like blog posts, meant to generate google hits, Diggs, Facebook mentions and reTweets, but not necessarily to form air-tight arguments. Whenever Avlon threw out a half-baked conjecture, I instinctively looked for a comment box below to vent my frustation. His thoughts needed more time to develop, as well as real discussions with a series of editors.

I respect Mr. Avlon and wish him the best. Hopefully, his next effort will put more of an emphasis on a new direction the country can take, and can offer something positive, instead of taking snipes from a distance.

Picture of Olbermann on the cover ????
By Alex K
Lets be honest, this book is about wingnuts of the right. Olbermann on the cover may be advertizing trick, attempt to look balanced or whatever, the book is not about people like him. Actually, only couple of pages even mention him and the biggest "wingnutty" thing that Olbermann has done ? Writing an angry special comment against Don Rumsfeld when Rummie compared anti-war people with Nazi appeasers. Seriously ??? THAT is the biggest thing about person you put on over, in the world of millions birthers and truthers ?

Yoga Philosophy of Patanjali: Containing His Yoga Aphorisms with Vyasa's Commentary in Sanskrit and a Translation with Annotations Includin

"It is the most readable and reliable account of classical yoga that I know. There are, of course, numerous secondary works on yoga, many of which are useful and some of which have considerable scientific value. There are few good editions of the actual primary sources, however, and Hariharananda's is one of those." -- Gerald J. Larson, Professor of Philosophy, University of California, Santa Barbara

The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali are universally acknowledged as the fundamental text on yoga and meditation in the Indian classical tradition. This English translation of Yoga Philosophy of Patanjali is widely regarded as the most authoritative and authentic that has been available in recent times. It is a serious and clear presentation of Patanjali's sutras and Vyasa's Bhasya, providing these basic texts both in the original Sanskrit and in readable and accurate English. These classical works are augmented by the commentary of Swami Hariharananda Aranya, a scholar and yogi of great repute, who, in his lifetime, was the foremost exponent in India of the Samkhya Yoga system of which the Yoga Aphorisms of Patanjali are the principal work.

Patanjali's Sutras Maximum Explanation
By Terry Burka
No conflicts here, especially since so many Patanjali authors conflict with each other. Swami Hariharananda is the real deal, no faking, no puffery, no pretending, not a new age guru who just learns the words, like so so so many. Truly and inspiration. No conflicts with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, also Self-realized. You just cant fake this stuff, and SHH authors the strongest Patanjali book in the world. For very similar information, and the Sutras taken from gross to subtle, from creation to pure consciousness, using SHH's book, please also see The Meditation Manual for Seekers.

Doubled Haploid Production in Crop Plants: A ManualFrom Springer

The production of doubled haploids has become a necessary tool in advanced plant breeding institutes and commercial companies for breeding many crop species. However, the development of new, more efficient and cheaper large scale production protocols has meant that doubled haploids are also recently being applied in less advanced breeding programmes. This Manual was prepared to stimulate the wider use of this technology for speeding and opening up new breeding possibilities for many crops including some woody tree species. Since the construction of genetic maps using molecular markers requires the development of segregating doubled haploid populations in numerous crop species, we hope that this Manual will also help molecular biologists in establishing such mapping populations. For many years, both the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) have supported and coordinated research that focuses on development of more efficient doubled haploid production methods and their applications in breeding of new varieties and basic research through their Plant Breeding and Genetics Section of the Joint F AO/IAEA Division of Nuclear Techniques in Food and Agriculture. The first F AO/IAEA scientific network (Coordinated Research Programme - CRP) dealing with doubled haploids was initiated by the Plant Breeding and Genetics Section in 1986.

Measuring Judicial Activism, by Stefanie Lindquist, Frank Cross

Measuring Judicial Activism supplies empirical analysis to the widely discussed concept of judicial activism at the United States Supreme Court. Complaints about activist Court decisions are common within contemporary political discourse, but these objections often have little substantive meaning beyond the speaker's disagreement with particular case outcomes. Frequently debated by legal scholars, judicial activism is shaped by the participants' ideological perspectives as well as by their subjective views regarding ambiguous constitutional provisions. Although no study can be perfectly objective, Measuring Judicial Activism seeks to move beyond these more subjective debates by conceptualizing activism in non-ideological terms, identifying specific empirical dimensions to the concept, and measuring those dimensions using systematic social scientific techniques. In so doing, the book allows the authors to assess the relative "activism" of recent justices on the Court.

Stefanie Lindquist and Frank B. Cross's work is guided theoretically by the notion that, at its core, the concept of activism involves concerns over the judiciary's institutional aggrandizement at the expense of the elected branches. An important corollary idea is that such efforts are particularly "activist" when they further the justices' own policy or ideological objectives. From these core theoretical ideas, the authors identify specific empirical manifestations that reflect the expansion of judicial power. In particular, the authors evaluate the Court's exercise of judicial review to invalidate legislative and executive action. Lindquist and Cross also analyze the justices' willingness to expand the Court's power by granting litigants increased access to the courts and overruling the Court's own precedents. In these contexts, Measuring Judicial Activism considers the extent to which these actions are consistent with the justices' ideological predilections.

Review

"Measuring Judicial Activism is a serious, scholarly work that nearly all academic law libraries will want to purchase." -- Law Library Review

"Lindquist and Cross seek to move beyond subjective debates about judicial activism on the US Supreme Court by conceptualizing activism in nonideological terms, identifying specific empirical dimensions to the concept, and measuring those dimensions using systematic techniques. Examining the Court's exercise of judicial review to invalidate legislative and executive action and the justices' willingness to expand the Court's power by granting litigants increased access to the courts, they assess the relative activism of recent justices on the Court."

The Yankee Years, by Joe Torre, Tom Verducci

The definitive story of one of the greatest dynasties in baseball history, Joe Torre's New York Yankees.

When Joe Torre took over as manager of the Yankees in 1996, they had not won a World Series title in eighteen years. In that time seventeen others had tried to take the helm of America’s most famous baseball team. Each one was fired by George Steinbrenner. After twelve triumphant seasons—with twelve straight playoff appearances, six pennants, and four World Series titles—Torre left the Yankees as the most beloved manager in baseball. But dealing with players like Jason Giambi, A-Rod, Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera, Roger Clemens, and Randy Johnson is what managing is all about. Here, for the first time, Joe Torre and Tom Verducci take readers inside the dugout, the clubhouse, and the front office, showing what it took to keep the Yankees on top of the baseball world.

About the Author
Joe Torre played for the Braves, the Cardinals, and the Mets before managing all three teams. From 1996 to 2007, Torre managed the New York Yankees. He is currently the manager for the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Tom Verducci is the senior baseball writer for Sports Illustrated and SportsIllustrated.com, and a baseball analyst for the MLB Network. Joe Torre was the fourth choice. The veteran manager was out of work in October of 1995, four months removed from the third firing of his managerial career, when an old friend from his days with the Mets, Arthur Richman, a public relations official and special adviser to Yankees owner George Steinbrenner, called him with a question. “Are you interested in managing the Yankees?” Torre made his interest known without hesitation. “Hell, yeah,” he said. Only 10 days earlier, Torre had interviewed for the general manager’s job with the Yankees, but he had no interest in such an aggravation-filled job at its $350,000 salary, a $150,000 cut from what he had been earning as manager of the St. Louis Cardinals before they fired him in June. His brother Frank Torre did not think managing the Yankees was worth the hassle, either. After all, Steinbrenner had changed managers 21 times in his 23 seasons of ownership, adding Buck Showalter to the bloody casualty list by running him out of town after Showalter refused to acquiesce to a shakeup of his coaching staff. It didn’t matter to Steinbrenner that the Yankees reached the playoffs for the first time in 14 years, even if it was as the first American League wild card team in a strike-shortened season. Showalter’s crimes in Steinbrenner’s book were blowing a two games to one lead in the best-of-five Division Series against the Seattle Mariners, and resisting the coaching changes. “Why do you want this job?” Frank Torre asked his brother. “It’s a no-lose situation for me,” Joe replied. “I need to find out if I can do this or not.” Richman also had recommended to Steinbrenner three managers with higher profiles and greater success than Torre: Sparky Anderson, Tony LaRussa and Davey Johnson. None of those choices panned out. Anderson retired, LaRussa took the managing job in St. Louis and Johnson, returning to his ballplaying roots, took the job in Baltimore. LaRussa and Johnson received far more lucrative contracts than what Steinbrenner wanted to pay his next manager. “I’ve got to admit, I was the last choice,” Torre said. “It didn’t hurt my feelings, because it was an opportunity to work and find out if I can really manage. I certainly was going to have the lumber.”
On Wednesday, November 1, Bob Watson, in his ninth day on the job as general manager after replacing Gene Michael, called Torre while Torre was driving to a golf course in Cincinnati. Watson summoned him to an interview in Tampa, Florida. That evening, Torre met with Steinbrenner, Watson, Michael, assistant general manager Brian Cashman and Joe Molloy, Steinbrenner’s son-in-law and a partner with the team. The next morning, Torre was introduced as the manager of the Yankees at a news conference in the Stadium Club of Yankee Stadium, standing in the same spot where Showalter had stood twelve months earlier as the 1994 AL Manager of the Year.
It was an inauspicious hiring in most every way. Steinbrenner did not bother to attend the introductory event of his new manager. The press grilled Torre. Not only had Torre been fired three times, but also he was 55 years old and brought with him a losing record (894-1,003), not one postseason series victory, and the ignominy of having spent more games over a lifetime of playing and managing without ever getting to the World Series than any other man in history. Torre was a highly accomplished player, even a star player, for 18 seasons with the Braves, Cardinals and Mets. He was named to nine All-Star teams and won one Most Valuable Player Award, with the Cardinals in 1971.When he played his last game in 1977,Torre was one of only 29 players in baseball history to have amassed more than 2,300 hits and an OPS+ of 128 (a measurement of combined on-base and slugging percentages adjusted for league averages and ballpark effects, thus making era-to-era comparisons more equitable). His career profile, however, was dimmed by never having played in the postseason.
Torre’s baseball acumen and leadership skills were so highly regarded that the Mets named him a player/manager at age 36 during the 1977 season. He ceased playing that same year, the first of his five years managing awful Mets teams. When the Mets fired him after the 1981 season, the Braves, owned by Ted Turner, quickly snapped him up. Torre immediately led the Braves to their first division title in 13 years. He lasted only two more seasons with Turner’s Braves. Torre spent almost six years out of baseball, serving as a broadcaster with the California Angels, until the Cardinals hired him to replace the popular Whitey Herzog in 1990. Those five seasons were the only seasons in which Torre did not play or manage in the major leagues since he broke in as a 20-year-old catcher in 1960 with the Milwaukee Braves, a team that also included Hall of Famers Hank Aaron, Eddie Mathews and Warren Spahn and Joe’s brother Frank.
One of Torre’s great strengths as a manager was that he understood what it was like to both star and struggle at the major league level. For instance, he hit .363 when he won the MVP Award in 1971, and 74 points lower the very next year. “And I tried just as hard both years,” he said. One day in 1975 with the Mets, Torre became the first player in National League history to ground into four double plays, each of them following a single by second baseman Felix Millan. He reacted to such infamy with humor. “I’d like to thank Felix Millan for making all of this possible,” he said.
At his introductory news conference, Torre displayed his cool demeanor and ease in front of a hostile media crowd. He answered questions with humor and optimism, and did not hesitate to talk about his lifetime goal of winning the World Series, something the Yankees had not done in 17 years, the longest drought for the franchise since it won its first in 1921. He knew Steinbrenner had grown restless.
“When you get married, do you think you’re always going to be smiling?” Torre said at the news conference. “I try to think of the potential for good things happening. That’s the World Series. I know here we’ll have the ability to improve the team . . . To have that opportunity is worth all the negative sides.”
All in all, Torre was not warmly received as the replacement for a popular young manager Steinbrenner had chased off after a playoff season. He was an admitted last choice for the job, and soon heard even after his hiring that Steinbrenner was working back channels to see if he could bring Showalter back. Critics regarded Torre as a recycled commodity without portfolio. Torre was in Cincinnati with in-laws on the day after his news conference when a friend from New York called him up.
“Uh, have you seen the back page of the Daily News?”
“No, why?”
The New York Daily News welcomed the hiring of Torre with a huge headline that said, “CLUELESS JOE.” The subhead read, “Torre Has No Idea What He’s Getting Himself Into.” It referenced a column written by Ian O’Connor in which O’Connor said that Torre “came across as naïve at best, desperate at worst.” Wrote O’Connor, “It’s always a sad occasion when man becomes muppet.” A last choice, a placeholder for Showalter, a man without a clue, a muppet . . . this is how Torre was welcomed as the new manager of the New York Yankees. None of it bothered him.
“It didn’t matter to me,” Torre said. “I was so tickled to have the opportunity that none of it mattered. I was a little nervous starting out with it. Every time you get fired there is always something you think you can do better. I started thinking, maybe I have to do this different or that different. And then one day before spring training began, I was thumbing through a book by Bill Parcells, the football coach. He said something like, ‘If you believe in something, stay with it.’ And that was enough for me.”
Under Torre’s recommendation, with input from Torre’s new bench coach, Don Zimmer,Watson’s first major player move was to acquire a strong defensive catcher to replace Mike Stanley, who was popular with Yankees fans for his hitting but was never known for his defense. On November 20, Watson traded relief pitcher Mike DeJean to the Colorado Rockies for Joe Girardi. It was the start of a frantic, sometimes curious 40-day period in which Watson, with assistance from Michael and, of course, Steinbrenner, assembled nearly a third of the 1996 roster, getting Girardi, first baseman Tino Martinez, reliever Jeff Nelson and outfielder Tim Raines in shrewd trades, signing second baseman Mariano Duncan and pitcher Kenny Rogers as free agents, and re-signing third baseman Wade Boggs and David Cone, their own free agent.
Actually, Cone’s signing had less to do with Watson but instead illustrated the sheer force and will Steinbrenner exerted over the baseball operations of the Yankees, who were the richest club in baseball but had yet to grow into the financial behemoth that would put them so far ahead of the 29 other franchises. In 1995, Steinbrenner spent $58.1 million on payroll, the most in baseball, but a somewhat reasonable 19 percent more than the second-biggest spender, the Baltimore Orioles. The 1996 Yankees would draw 2.2 million fans to Yankee Stadium, ranking them seventh among the 14 American League teams. Cone was set to re-sign with the Yankees until Watson called his agent, Steve Fehr, to suddenly reduce the terms of the deal. An angered Cone immediately entered into negotiations with the Orioles, negotiations that moved so quickly the Orioles began internal plans for an afternoon news conference to announce his signing. One small hangup remained, however. “I probably would have signed if it wasn’t fo...

An insightful look at America's game
By Julie Neal
I am not a Yankee fan. I am not a Red Sox fan. I have no dog in this fight.

Now, with that out of the way, I hope you'll give me a fair shake at this.

My opinion: this is a good read, at times even gripping. Its value lies beyond what gossip it contains about A-Rod or how it gets back at the Steinbrenners. It's an inside look at how baseball has changed, in ways that are often not that good.

I thought The Yankee Years would be a routine behind-the-scenes tell-all, but its ambitions are bigger. It chronicles the end of an era in baseball, a more innocent time before steroid scandals, big money and executive decisions based on advanced statistical analysis.

This is not a Joe Torre memoir. Torre provides his voice and viewpoint throughout the book, but Verducci also quotes dozens and dozens of other key personalities. He weaves it all into a fascinating narrative that covers all the highs and lows of the Yankee's dynasty years.

The book throws a spotlight on many key players from this era. Some shine, others don't. David Cone, Mike Mussina and Derek Jeter shine. Jeter, in particular, impresses throughout with his sunny optimism and quiet leadership. If you weren't a Jeter fan before, you will be after reading it.

There has been a lot of buzz about Torre dissing players in these pages. The "A-Fraud" reference to Alex Rodriguez is a throwaway reference to what guys in the clubhouse -- not Torre -- called A-Rod in 2004, about how the player tried to fit in during his first season as a Yankee. "People in the clubhouse, including teammates and support personnel, were calling him `A-Fraud' behind his back." Instead, Torre offers his clear-eyed assessment of Rodriguez as a player who can't succeed as a team player because of his fear of failure. "There's a certain free-fall you have to go through," he says, "when you commit yourself without a guarantee that it's always going to be good. There's a sort of trust, a trust and commitment thing that has to allow yourself to fail. Allow yourself to be embarrassed. Allow yourself to be vulnerable. And sometimes players aren't willing to do that."

It's almost biblical the way it all ends. A cloud of midges on a hot Cleveland night dooms the Yankees in a key playoff game. Thousands of the irritating insects descend on the mound, thoroughly rattling the pitcher. Bug spray makes the torment worse, not better. This perfect swarm seals Torre's fate. He leaves the Yankees not long after the loss, after a painful 10-minute meeting where he realizes his own personal Judas is his long-time general manager, Brian Cashman. "Cashman had retreated to silence with Torre's job on the line. The allies of Joe Torre had dwindled to zero."

Throughout the arc of this tale, Torre comes across as calm, determined and fair.

I should admit I do have a slight bias. When I was in junior high growing up outside St. Louis, Joe Torre taught me to play infield. He was playing third base for the Cardinals then. He appeared at the community center in my neighborhood outside the city one day and gave a handful of us kids a free lesson. I'll never forget it; he was patient and explained the game in detail, like he actually cared that we understood it. I learned a lot in that hour, from a decent man.

Here's the chapter list:

1. Underdogs
2. A Desperation to Win
3. Getting an Edge
4. The Boss
5. Mystique and Aura
6. Baseball Catches Up
7. The Ghosts Make a Final Appearance
8. The Issues of Alex
9. Marching to Different Drumbeats
10. End of the Curse
11. The Abyss
12. Broken Trust
13. "We Have a Problem"
14. The Last Race
15. Attack of the Midges
16. The End

Deserves more than 5 stars....
By Robert Busko
The Yankee Years by Joe Torre and Tom Verducci has received a large amount of pre-release press especially from the New York media, but also the L. A. Times. I can't remember a book release in the recent past that has garnered so much attention before anyone has had a chance to read it. Even Steinbrenner is curious about the books contents. He should be.

The Yankee Years is a measured and thoughtful look at the years Joe Torre managed the Yankees, 1996-2007. During that time he got to and won four World Series out of five, not an easy task for anyone. Torre also stopped much of the ridicule he received from the New York media upon his appointment. If winning four World Series doesn't prove you're worthy of the job, nothing else will. The fact of the matter is that Joe Torre became the most beloved Yankees managers of all time winning the respect of the fans and his players.....also not an easy task given the list of outstanding players he worked with.

Not being a part of professional sports means that most of us read these kinds of books with a fascination made up of a combination of awe and disgust. Our only window into professional sports is comprised of the media, written and electronic and then watching the games as they come to us, one after another as the season progresses. I say this, because that means books such as the Yankee Years become our "inside" story; our life line and private peek into the insanity of what has become "professional sports."

The Yankee Years has already aggravated several A-list players that are mentioned in the book. A-Rod, reportedly referred to as A-Fraud by his team mates, and David Wells just to name two people who may not be happy with the publication of The Yankee Years.

Well written and very readable, the Yankee Years is above all else interesting and will be a book any baseball fan will want to read regardless of your team affiliation. Let's face it, the Yankees are the most storied of professional baseball teams and reading about them interests us even if we aren't fans.

Joe Torre's The Yankee Years is worth reading. I highly recommend.

Peace

A Yankees tour of duty with Torre.
By Jaime Contreras
Tom Verducci has captured the man that Joe Torre was during his 12 years (1996-2007)at the helm of the New York Yankees. This is an excellent account of the journey of Torre during his challenging and very successful run as the manager of the always controversial and winning baseball team. Torre shares his colorful and challenhing relationship with George Steinbrenner, dealing with the FO, handling personalities and managing the role of being the skipper of the iconic Yankees. The book comes alive largely due to Verducci's realistic capturing of the main players: the Yankees brass (Steinbrenner, Cashman, Levine, Swindal, et al), Torre and his coaches (Zimmer, Stottlemeyer, Bowa, Kerrigan, et al), and the Yankees stalwarts (Jeter, Williams, Rivera, Posada, Cone, Pettite, Williams,Rodriguez, Clemens, Wells, et al) and the world that is baseball, The readers gets it all: the player pick-ups; the prima donnas; the villains; the duds and the heroes; and the games. This is a wonderful book about the game of baseball as seen from the Yankees historical period of 1996 to 2007. Any fan of baseball will be enthralled and entertained. Play Ball, Yankees style!
