About the Author

The authors are recipients of the prestigious M. Eugene Merchant Manufacturing Textbook Award, presented by the Society of Manufacturing Engineers in recognition of the year’s most outstanding manufacturing-related textbook. They received this award for their Introduction to Computer Numerical Control (Prentice Hall).    

James Valentino holds a doctorate in applied mechanics from the Polytechnic University of New York. He has over 30 years experience teaching technology courses and many years experience in industry. Formerly, he was professor and chairperson of the department of Mechanical Engineering Technology & Design Drafting at Queensborough Community College (CUNY). He is a member of Sigma XI and a senior member of SME.

Joseph Goldenberg is a mechanical engineer with over 40 years experience as a machine tool designer, CNC programmer, manufacturing manager and college professor. He is the founder and president of the Center for Advanced Manufacturing Studies (www.learncnc.com), a company dedicated to training and advising manufacturing personnel in the latest developments of CNC and CAD/CAM technology. The artwork on this is amazing! I can't think of any graphic novel write now that it more of a piece of art to look at. I really think it's a fun story, and completely amazing to look at! Check it out, you won't regret it.

Literate, artistic, cinematic... the ultimate graphic novel

I got the original comics when they were first released, being a fan of Frank Miller. I hadn't heard of Geof Darrow at that time.

Since then, I have picked up this book for myself to replace a worn copy of an earlier reprint (this printing has the cover art, which is most welcome), and for everyone I know who doesn't already have one. It's that good. You'll read it, put it down and stare into space for a while, then immediately start reading it again. It's that good.

Now, if it was just for the awe-inspiring, OCD-derived skills of artist Darrow, the book would be visually impressive enough. Nowhere is there the clean, spartan lines of a mainstream superhero comic. Clutter is everywhere, and it is as lovingly detailed as are the bizarre residents of this dark future. Car seats and footwells are littered with junk food wrappers, spare parts, toys, and utensils. Cars parked on the street are dented. Trash heaps are strewn with recognizable artifacts, not only from the modern day but things that should be available any day now. Japanese characters and English exist in a side-by-side melange on buildings and packages. It's a confusing swirl that somehow makes sense. Oh, and yes, it's hypersexual and ultraviolent; human life is cheap. But that's a reflection of the culture. Even if not a single shot was fired, it's clear that the individual means little or nothing to the people running the world. As Barbara says, "I hate flesh."

But you also have the literary talents of Miller, who has in this work exceeded even the high bar he has set for comic-book writing. It's not only entertaining, it's important. I'd rank this as the graphic novel equivalent of George Orwell's 1984-- the book that I think people HAVE to read these days. There's deep meaning in the simplest scenes; the dream sequence (about a third of the way through) is classic Miller.

And people talk like-- well, like people. (Except for one amazingly odd thing: Little or no cussing. A biker, about to strike a little old lady, says "You old so-and-so! We'll show you!" Somehow it makes it more eerie than if the characters had cussed like the South Park kids.) The book stays true to one of the most important developments of the cyberpunk style: No exposition. There is not a single panel that brings readers up-to-date on the social history, no asterisks in the speech balloons advising you to see some other comic book, no dialogue that infodumps in a way that no human being outside of a college lecture hall ever has. No. You're dropped into the thick of this universe and are trusted to be able to figure it out for yourself. You catch the middles of conversations, people speak in incomplete sentences, and the simple "whuff" when someone is punched says more than a multi-color, two-panel "SPLADAM!" Of course, the protagonist, Carl Seltz et. al., does keep up a running monologue. But it goes more to his mental state than to any understanding of this world's history.

The ending: both triumphant and depressing at the same time. How often do you see that happen?

Buy this book. Buy another copy for a friend. You'll want to have someone to talk about it with. It's that good.

Another excellent work by Tom Bancroft!

Since I was 3 years old I wanted to be a Disney animator. I've practiced and practiced and gotten pretty far studying the masters of animation. But there was always just a little something missing. This book has already given me the boost I need. It has tons of helpful advice for anyone from novice to advanced users. Most books on character design really only scratch the surface. Tom Bancroft takes a chisel and turns that surface into a carefully sculpted work of craftsmanship. He allows us on the "outside" of the industry to finally get at all the juicy tips he learned in his time at Disney. Outstanding work, Tom. I'm forever a huge fan.

BEST HOW-TO BOOK ON CARTOONING EVER?

I don't know where to begin praising this book. Sure, there's TONS of how-to books on cartooning out there
but FINALLY here's a book that is hyper-specific on the little nuances of creating characters. "Twinning", using depth,
specifics on how wrinkles work on clothing, etc. In addition, there's contributions by other artists like Terry Dodson,
Stephen Silver, etc. Also, there's some assignments for the reader to do. Tom's Disney-esque drawing style is just bursting with
life and energy. (Obviously a graduate of CAL-ARTS.)

Please note that this may not be a book for beginners. The book focuses more on bringing life and energy to your
characters.

I highly recommend purchasing Tom's previous book "Creating Characters with Personality" too by the way.

A MUST for any aspiring cartoonist!

The Real Deal

In the fields of animation and illustration, the craft of character design is often completely overlooked by the casual observer. Instead, the human eye perceives the most well-crafted characters as living things, whether we're looking at a sequence of frames or simply one static image, because the finest character designers have learned what exactly tricks the brain into seeing life in lines.

There have been a handful of books over the last thirty years or so that have touched on this topic to one degree or another. However, these are very often oversimplified, starting with volumetric shapes and hurrying through the details to arrive at the quickest complete character possible. Such methods are certainly valid and universally applicable -- for first-year animation students, perhaps, or fledgling comic book artists. Up until now, the question of what makes a character truly unique and lively has been left as something the novice must explore him/herself.

Tom Bancroft's book is probably the first one of its kind that goes past this basic level. Right off the bat, Tom assumes the reader is not only intelligent but avidly interested in the details. He explores perceptual cues, the various methods of conveying emotion and personality (which are far more numerous than simply drawing a smile or a frown), and the tiny little decisions that can completely alter the way an audience will see a character, for better or for worse.

Tom's experience as a veteran of Disney's traditional animation era really shines through here. And in an age where technology provides an ever-increasing range of shortcuts, it's ultimately all the more important that these techniques be detailed and passed on to the next generation of artists. Check this out -- you won't regret it.

and the good guys don’t always win

Operation Road Warrior is one of those spell-binding, page-turners that you can’t put down…even though its harsh brutality paints a picture of war that makes even the most stalwart wince. Author Mick Haven’s rendition of battle is almost too real. Explosions don’t just light-up the night sky, they bring death and destruction; bullets don’t fly over head, they make sickening thuds as they slam into flesh. And don’t look for soldiers basking in the glory of battle. This is a portrait of men engaged in brutal combat, a struggle for survival that doesn’t always go well...and the good guys don’t always win. It’s real, it’s brutal and it’s authentically written by an ex-SEAL who makes war come to life in all its horrifying reality. I’m waiting expectantly for the next segment of this serialized story to post.

BRAVO ZULU

Mr Haven treats the reader to a vacation in hell with the only group you would want to be there with, if you absolutely had to-the Navy SEALS!
I found this story to be a frightening, realistic POV thrill ride through sand, blood, and war, viewed through the eyes Floyd(the platoon's F'n New Guy) who is being initiated the U.S's deadliest fraternity. This story leaves you with smells of gun powder and death in your nose, ringing eardrums,
and hope and awe for the cunning, competent(even cocky?!), scrappy warriors we meet from Bravo platoon, SEAL Team 4. Mick Haven nailed this first installment, along with being interesting, exciting and educational, there was just the right splash of history, logistics -and even dark humor. I can't wait for the next REAL SEAL story installment.

Hemingway Meets 21st Century Warfare

Stark, gritty, effective writing! The style is best described as Hemingway meets 21st century warfare, written with the informed voice of an insider who knows contemporary military technology and lingo, and who isn't afraid to write in a no-holds-barred way about the bloody and gruesome aftermath of encounters with the so-called "bad guys." Haven believably captures the emotional rollercoaster of preparing for, executing, and processing a Navy SEAL's first live encounter with the enemy. Even if war writing isn't necessarily your thing, you should find this a gripping read.

Engaging and fun, with a few flaws

Like all DK Eyewitness travel books this one is packed with nice photographs to illustrate the pages and make it fun to read. I was looking for a review book as well as an introductory guide for my wife that would be more interesting than a plain text phrasebook, and it qualifies well.

The flaw that I have noted, (and is presumably corrected if you have the version with the 2 CDs), is that the pronunciation guides (phonetic examples) are written using UK English, rather than American English. So "raucher" (smoking) is given as "row-kher". Because we pronounce "row" differently from the English (rhymes with cow), this is a problem. I have not seen many cases of this, but there may be others.

John Locke's Second Treatise of Government (c. 1681) is perhaps the key founding liberal text. The basis of civil government

This compilation of Locke's political writings not only contains his famed second treatise, but also suplementary essays supporting his views and espousing other particulars. The book is a must for any one interested in political philosophy in the least simply because most of the ideas espoused were incorparated into the foundation of our country. The essays set up locke's basic democratic theories and his version of social contract society. the reading is mildly technical and archaic, but not too bad. an excellent start to any one interested in philosophy
